Got a new DPMS CMP/DCM complete upper from MidwayUSA and it arrived today, but something looks awfully wrong with the rear A2 sight assembly:
If the rear sight's elevation adjustment is not screwed all the way down, the sight will torque to the counterclockwise. If I nudge it, it'll realign but there feels to be spring tension that will torque it back as soon as I let go:

If I have the rear elevation adjustment spun all the way down to the 300Y mark, then I can get the rear sight assembly to stay straight forward:

Is this normal? Should I RMA it Midway ?

Thanks in advance.

Normal for a unpinned rear sight.

wouldn't that affect my point of aim? Is there a way I can pin it so it doesn't torque?

It may be my OCD, but it's definitely bothering me....

all A2 sights are like that to some degree due to the design

Fulton Armory for pinned sight.  Bushmaster for a two bearing sight
You should ask that this be moved to the High power forum

As is, my main concern is will this screw up my zeroing process and future accuracy?

Not really, A2's have been that way since day one.

1st post and all of that.

You can shim the right side of the wings to prevent this, or better, get the lower and sight pinned.

Thanks for the replies- up until this rifle, all my other ARs have been optics based and not-irons, so I'm touch and go right now with this new A2.

Can you guys point me in the right direction for pinning the rear sight base?

[And RedFalconBill, why do I need to pin my lower?]

It is a mistake because it is too late for me to be up, that's why!

I would tell you the same as others. Learn to live with it, chances are you'll you'll learn to ignore it. If you absolutely can't live with it there are a couple of extreme measures for those so inclined. I've seen a second detent put on the opposite side, sorry I can't find the instructions for this. In essence it comes down to acquiring a second spring a detent ball. Then drilling the sight on the opposite side to match the existing detent and equalize the pressure on both sides. This person (Steve Wagner, so as to give the appropriate credit) also has a fix though either of these suggestions is quite a bit of work. Personally I probably wouldn't consider either of these fixes unless I already had it apart for a competition sight set up.
Crooked Sight Fix

Edit: Actually I just looked this up and as someone mentioned Bushmaster makes a sight with dual detent balls. The one I had seen was a DIY set up.
