looking to build my first AR. i am thinking of ordering an RRA lower with the 2 stage trigger and an AWB compliant stock, what do you think of that lower? i need help picking out an upper. i would like something with a 16 inch barrel, mid length gas system, free float 4 rail (9inch), no sights and a compensator (welded to be awb legal) can you guys point me in the right direction?

Right here

Should have every option you want, and for a good price as well

Good lowers. I would put a A1 or A2 on, Fixed collapsible stocks do nothing for me. your paying for looks and very little function.

trigger I use JP single stages 110 bucks and work well.

For a free float tube I would look into rifle length (12"+), for me the 9" just are not long enough.  I go with round tubes and add rails as needed, for 2 reasons, cost and comfort.

barrel 16" mid length or 18" rifle.

Just something to think about...

I bought an RRA lower a few months ago, based on everyone's relatively high opinion of RRA equipment.  I did not realize at the time that there were two different receiver extension sizes: mil-spec and commercial.  RRA uses the commercial sizing.  See the difference here.

It's not a big deal, especially if you plan on just going with an A2 stock.  Get it from RRA and you're golden.  However, if you want to replace the stock with something adjustable in the future, your options seem to be somewhat limited.  Also, not a lot of online vendors seem to carry the commercial-spec stocks either, so the chances of finding one at a nice price are kind of slim.  That's been my experience at least.

I don't necessarily regret buying the RRA lower.  Though, I may have just bought a Spikes had I known about the commercial v. mil-spec thing beforehand.

As for an upper:
If you're set on getting the RRA, the 16" Predator Pursuit might meet your needs.  The 16" varmint is overkill and weighty, in my opinion.

I live in a ban state as well.  I was all set to purchase the 16" PP, but didn't because of the bad influences on these forums.   I wound up deciding to buyld the entire gun from the ground up.  I'm still waiting on a custom made crowned barrel, which I bought because I didn't want to deal with a compensator.  I'll have one on the 14.5" I'm gonna build soon though (this is what I mean about BAD influences - i started out only wanting one AR).

A commercial or mil-spec receiver extension will work on any lower. It just makes a difference when you are looking for a stock. This also only matters for carbine receiver extensions. An A2 stock will use a rifle extension and AFAIK there is only one size for those.

My understanding was that a mil-spec receiver extension on a commercial-spec lower would have a bit of play due to the reduced thread diameter.

Only one size thread in the Lower. Only the Carbine receiver extensions are different.
Commercial, Mil-spec or mil-spec OD, commercial process.
All Rifle receiver extensions are the same.

All Lowers have the same thread.

Why weld the compensator if you're using a 16 inch barrel?

Because we live in the crappiest states in the US.  AWB compliance.
