Can you cut (or rather grind down) a barrel so that it will work in a m4 cut upper? Looking at it it looks like not much needs to be removed..... what does the hive mind think? |

| It can be done .... there was a member here that did a thread about it and it looked pretty good once he was done (I can't find the thread now). Just go slow and keep checking the barrel in the receiver to see how close you are .... might want to run some 800-1000 grip sand paper (wrapped around a wooden dowel) over the ramps afterward to kind of polish them up ... also make sure you clean the chamber real good when your done. |

The barrel is stainless, I do not know about the extension. I do have experince working with metal. I do not know however if messing with it will cause other problems. if it is chromed and you modify it how will that effect it later?? |

if it is chromed and you modify it how will that effect it later?? chrome plating is just that, a plating. if you grind an area which is chrome plated, you will remove the plating. that doesn't mean your barrel extension is chrome plated, or even 4140/4150 CrMo steel for that matter. so first steps... do you have the SS barrel in front of you? does a magnet stick to the barrel extension? ar-jedi |

Even with a chrome lined barrel, the extension is not chrome lined. The extension is added to the barrel after the barrel is chromed.
Grinding out the feed ramps with a Dremel tool is not difficult - but you must be very careful and take your time. Test fit the barrel to the upper often to monitor your progress and avoid mistakes. I recommend using diamond bits rather than stone bits. They cut much better. I got a set of them at my local hardware store for 30 bucks or so. Money well spent! I don't have a pic to post of my conversion job, but there isn't much to see - it looks just like a factory M4 pair of feed ramps! |

Only problems is if you screw up then your out a barrel. It is not hard to do right with the correct tool. Me I just get a non M4 cut upper. Unless you already have the item in stock. |

They are heat treated, to a shallow depth. |
