Ok, so I am piecing together my first upper and I am going to get a DD quad rail.  I am also going to get an M4 barrel with carbine length gas system and low-pro gas block.  My question is, how long of a rail is needed to cover the gas block?

While browsing pictures, I came across this picture that is virtually identical to how I would like mine to look (with regards to the gas block and rail).  I am guessing that's a carbine length gas system with a nine inch rail.  I really like how the gas block and rail seem to be cut off on the same plane.  Are my assumptions correct?  Or should I just go with a 10 to be sure.  If any of the gas block is sticking out from under the rail I will not like it.

BTW - If it matters I'm going with a DD barrel and gas-block too.

Thanks,

9-10" will cover

I think the more the better!

16" barrel with a DD 14.o lite rail!

Thanks, but will nine be enough?

Yes, a 9" inch rail will completely cover your carbine length gas system.

With a carbine length gas system with a low pro gas block a nine inch rail would cover it nicely.  But you have to ask yourself how much rail do I want.  A 10 would work.... 12 even a 14 on a 16 inch barreled rifle.  What are you going to be putting on the quad rail.... VFG AFG....lights.. lasers ...swivel mounts.... hand stops....the more stuff you are gonna put on it may dictate how much rail space you want to have.

Is yours going to be a SBR?  If not, you won't get the same look with your gun as the first picture.  If you are going to run a 16" barrel, I would personaly run a 12" rail.  A 12" is going to give you pleanty of rail space and won't leave a lot of barrel exposed.  The 14" is ok, but seems like a little bit of an overkill (IMO) and adds a little weight.  You can't go wrong with DD though...and they have a TON of options!

No, I am not going to SBR so I know the overall barrel length won’t be the same as the picture.  I just like how the quad-rail and gas block are ‘cut off’ on the same plane, so the ends of each line up.  Since I can’t tell in the picture how long the rail is, I was just guessing.  I just wanted to see if a 9” quad rail would give me the same result…

I think I might just go 10" to make sure but that set-up in the pic sure looks slick.

i'm still a green one yall so dont make fun lol.. I didn't know you could put anything longer than a 7' rail on a carbine but yea its pretty obvious i guess long as you use a low profile gb.    I thought only mid length's could use longer rails? is there any difference? why is it I thought they were Only middy builds with those long rails?
