So I found a deal on an A2 upper I couldn't pass up. It has the EK mark on it and that's about all I know until the postman brings it. I want an on-the-cheap build for a no frills truck gun and never built an A2 from the ground up before. I'm hoping just to find good deals on the EE and snatch them when I can and am wanting an old school CAR type rig. Can I use a 16" barrel or do I need to stick with a 20" one? What FSB will I need?

Sorry about the stupid questions Any help is appreciated, thank you.

If you want to build a CAR style then the 16" barrel would make more sense than a 20" rifle barrel no?  Either FSB, F or not, will work fine with an A2 upper.

Not a stupid question.

You can use any barrel you please as long as it is > 16" in total length. Most people stick a collapsable stock to a carbine (16") barrel but there is no rule that says you can't use a 20" barrel with a collapsable stock (as in the Canadian C7's) or a fixed stock with a shorter barrel.

When buying the barrel, buy one that has the FSB already pinned on it, from your wording in the post it seems like pinning on a FSB may be a little much for you to handle...
An A2 upper receiver should use a "non F-marked FSB" as "F-marked FSB's" are meant for flattop upper receivers.

Great. My main concern was that I didn't know if the A2 rear sights were specifically for a 20" or not. Also I had never delved into the F marked/non-F marked FSB before. I have taken them off and put them on rigs they started out on (FF installation) as well as replaced them with railed GB's. Looking at it again, I should have been more succinct in my initial question. Thanks for the replies!

No, plenty of carbines with A2 rear sights.  The F FSB is intended for the flat tops and mostly necessary for flat top carbines, but will work with A1 and A2 uppers just fine.  The pre-M4 Colt Carbines all had approximately .04" taller front sight posts anyways.
