I am currently building to lower receivers and am looking for a roll pin punch set.  Can you guys recommend a decent set?  Or will the parts store be the best bet?  Thanks.

I recently purchased a Stanley Proto roll-pin punch set...says Made in USA all over it. Drips quality...the punches are real tool steel and won't crumble or bend like hardware store cheap chinese imports.

Here are the sizes you would need if you aren't buying a set...this set ran me like $90 but was truly worth it.

1/16
3/32
1/8
5/32
3/16
7/32
1/4

You only need roll pin punches for the smaller sizes, I doubt you will encounter a 1/4" roll pin on a firearm.

Another source for roll pin punches is Brownells (brownells.com).

They have one that is shaved in half for the bolt catch pin.

I found one at sears without the 1/4" for $19.00, I may pick that one up since Sears has a lifetime warranty.

You shouldn't need a single punch to put a lower together if you have a set of vise grips. I find it a lot better to 'press' the roll pins in with vise grips to be much easier, especially because both sides of the joint are supported and you don't end up breaking any ears off.

do you get them all the way in with the Vice grips? I cant seem to get them totally flush, I always end up having to finish them with a punch.

I guess I could try the ole vise grips.  I'll probably still pick up a set of punches, Sears doesn't have them in stock.  Guess I'll check with Lowes.

I did 10 lowers with a Sears Craftsman pin punch set. (Not a roll pin set).  I used masking tape to hold the trickier pins.  I tried one with vice grips.  It left a mark.

I bought a Smith and Wesson set from Midway USA on sale and the important thing to consider is that this set has the smallest punch needed for the AR.
Some of the sets fall short of this 1 punch which can cause problems.

I have the Brownell's set and it works great.  I only use the vice grips for the bolt catch pin, although I might try it on the trigger guard with my next build.  I have problems with the trigger guard sliding out of position as I'm hammering the pin in and I'm worried that one of these days I'm gonna break an ear off.

Sears was out of stock so I went to Brownells website and they are on backorder.  I'll probably wait so i can pick up a hammer when they are in stock.  Till then I'll use vise grips and tape.

But eventually you may want to remove one of those pins...

I picked up a Model 1 punch set somewhere (Midway?), and it was cheap and effective.

I put my lower together with vice grips only.  DON'T FORGET THE ELECTRICAL TAPE!    I used masking tape after not being able to find my electrical tape.  I was too impatient.  Left a couple small bare spots around the bolt catch area.  The trigger guard pin didn't go in below flush, I don't care at the moment, it may bother me later though.  Not a big deal, I plan on adding the Magpul MOE trigger guard to it soon.  I decent set of punches would be nice but it's not necessary.
