can you use a specter length free float tube on a midlength gas system with a low profile gas block?

Sure you can, but it won't quite cover the gas block. If I recall the dimensions correctly the YHM specter length will cover about half of a midlength systems gas block. You'd ned a rifle length HG to completely cover a mid-length gas block.
