Will an H3 buffer function in a 18 inch barrel with a midlength gas system?

Probably not, but it depends on the barrel and the ammo.

I've got an 18" rifle length gas (WOA SPR barrel) working with an H2 buffer and medium power reloads.

It might just work. If it doesn't, you could always take apart an old carbine buffer and swap out the weights inside until you get a working combination.

So what weight is recomended? H2?

It varies, the only way to know for sure is to try it.

So if you wanted to go the cheap route and get 2 h buffers, when you already had a regular carbine buffer, could you just buy a heavier one and move some weights over?

I think that is exactly what MagazineFed is talking about. But I am thinking about just adding my own weights now that he has brought this up instead of buying another entire buffer. What should be put inside other than the "powder" I have heard about in another post?

I removed one of the steel rings and filled the space with crushed .177 cal airgun pellets. I don't have a scale to weigh the buffer but the rifle (24" varmint) shoots great now. It was "twangy" and snappy.

Good idea. Thats kinda what I was looking for something to add some weight without rattling like lead shot probably would.
