OK. So I figured it was time for my first build. Well 5 actually. So I got these today and wanted some input. I'm thinking of 4 in 5.56 and 1 9mm. The 4 5.56's will be a 11.5"sbr, 14.5" M4gery, 20" DMR, and a 24" sniper. The 9mm will be a 10.25"sbr. Thoughts?

I say you pick one between the 20" and 24" and throw in a 6.8 SPC instead.
I thought about a 6.8, but I don't want to add another caliber to load or buy. I say you should build one and learn to know it as you know yourself. Well I've owed AR's in the past, but this is my first build. I say get busy filing those form 1's with BATF&E. There on the way from ATF. Just waiting on USPS. I did not get what I wanted (the virgins) out of this thread. But nice lowers though. Sorry to burst your bubble... Build one. Once you have built one, it will make you wiser and will change your mind on the rest. That's what I'm afraid of. I'm gonna try to stay on target and not change my mind TOO much. What kind of lowers do you have there? DSA. Me and a buddy got some other guys together and did a group buy. Yeah, build up the pinned 14.5 or 16" one 1st then go from there. Yup. Already decided the M4 was the first one on deck. Then the 20", 11.5", 9mm, then last will be the 24" $600.00 in tax stamps! Wow you must be rich. It's only gonna be $400. The M4 will be pinned. I'm actually doing 3 for my family. The 20" will be my oldest son's, the M4 my youngest boys, the 9mm will go to the wife and the 11.5" is all mine. The 24" is just an extra and for fun. Thanks guys. Keep up the comments. I'll be picking all your brains as time goes on. I hope to start on the M4 by early next month. |

You realize the background checker probably put you on a special list** !!................any weird cars w/ blacked out windows parked across the street?
Luckily my buddy arranged the FFL, so it's HIS name on the 4473's If you are going to pin the M4, I would consider 14.7" instead. Wouldn't the 14.5 with the standard A2 give me 16.1? That's what I've been told. And where could I get a 14.7? |

You would need an extended A2 if you went with the 14.5". Or, you can pick from the many other muzzle device options that give you the legal length. |
| The reason I say 14.7 is if down the road you want/need to make some changes, and you need to sacrifice the flash hider, you're only out 8 bucks (standard A2 hider) versus $30+. But shop around, there are surely some good deals on extended A2s, or barrels already pinned. |

They look good and work very well. Until that day, Darkop |

i'd say you've got 4 of my 5 favorite build setups going on. what i will tell you is that a 24" barrel is overkill and you don't need to go over 20" unless you want to spend a lot of time with handloads and its only going to be a bench rifle with match chambering. i've had one, and its kind of pointless after a while. you can only get excited by so many ragged hole groups. a 20" can do almost the same thing and its way easier to maneuver with. i would skip out on the 24" and do a dedicated .22lr build instead, maybe a 7" pistol or 11.5" just to plink with to keep the cost low when you get the itch.
i'm on my 13th build, and its BRD for me. |
