So I've got my heart set on an AR-15. Not only that but I'm really interested in buying it in pieces and building it myself. Now obviously I've come here because I'm not 100% of how exactly to get started. I could use some advice and expertise, including tips on where to buy, how to buy, etc. Just a general layout of what to expect. Feedback would be tremendously helpful. I'm not interested in any rail upper receivers or anything fancy. Just a stock l AR-15, or maybe an M4 look, with the retractable stock, etc. |

Make sure you read the stickies in this forum on how to build your own, make sure you get the right tools for the job, and any of the vendors on this site are good to go to get the parts from. Everyone here will be able to help you along the way should you have any questions or problems.
And welcome to Arfcom

I could use some advice...
How about: It's not an assault rifle!
It might be if it's fully automatic. But then that could earn him an all expenses paid trip to club fed.
Even if it was fully automatic, it would still be designated an Armalite Rifle. |

Read the info on this website: http://www.ar15.com/ And then come back with any questions you have. Every thing you will ever need to know about building an AR is already there and easy to find if you look. |

This isn't GD, please knock off the crabbing about the assault rifle stuff. This is as counterproductive as whining that someone bought some "clips' "Oh but clips are something different and even though almost no one uses them anymore and we know exactly what you meant we must complain!" |

You need to buy the lower, which is the serialized part and has to go through an FFL. You'll need a lower parts kit and the buttstock assembly and related parts. The upper is a little more work, you'll need an action block, vise, barrel wrench and a few other specialized tools. I would buy quality parts. I buy parts mostly from PK Firearms, Denny"s Guns and Bravo Company. |

See here's the thing if you actually look through the forums you will see there are many threads answering all of your questions many of them are stickies. To start with there is: Build it yourself http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=4 And within that there is Assemble your own AR15 rifle from parts.... for dummies. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782 Which has detailed step-by-step instructions on every aspect of building your own AR. Within that first thread there is also: POST PICS OF YOUR BUILDS HERE.....SHOW EM OFF! PT 2! http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=409405 That has 60+ pages of every AR you could imagine in every possible configuration anyone could think of. There are sub headings for pistols, SBRs, precision rifles and everything else. To come in and ask a general open question like you are is not bound to get a big response when the info is there if you look. So not to be rude but go to the AR-15 section of the forum READ READ READ and come back when you have a specific question about something you might have missed or want clarified but don't just come to the site where it is all laid out for you and ask someone to read it to you. |
