I am looking to understand the type of barrel I should go with...
Spikes has a great M4 deal, but the barrel is Chromoly Vanadium Alloy... I am unfamiliar...

I have always had a chrome barrel... thoughts?

CV alloy describes the steel used in the barrel.  Chrome-vanadium is quite nice steel, but there are a number of different types that this description could apply to.  Chrome LINED means just that and does not even touch on what steel the barrel is made of.

A lot of people will say "get the chrome lined" because it's easier to clean and theoretically will last longer.  But any barrel Spikes is selling should be a very good barrel, even if it isn't lined.  The barrel for my 9mm SBR came from them and it's extremely nice.

IIRC, most chrome lined barrels are just CV Steel barrels that have been lined with a few micrometers of chrome.

The extra lining of chrome gives the steel increased corrosion resistance (pitting and stuff). Chrome is also supposed to lubricate better, but I have no idea why that is.
