So I have done some research and for my budget I think Del-Ton gives good bang for the buck.

I have done a lot of reading on this forum. It seems overall a lot of people agree on this choice, some do not. Understandable.

Someone posted a link where you could get a spikes upper for $475. While this upper seemed nice, you have to consider it doesn't come with bolt, stock, hand grip, lower kit and the upgrade options seem fairly close to what buying the parts from the original manufacturer would cost.

So i go Del-Ton.

My main question is: What is the difference between their 16" Rifle kit and the 16" m4 kit besides 20 dollars?

Since I know I wont be mounting a 203 or a bayonet any time soon, is there an advantage to going with the M4 profile barrel?
I assume the thicker barrel on the 16" regular kit maybe a bit more accurate.

Also I understand there is the 1/7 twist for the m4 barrel, which is for heavier grains ( i think I have this right).

As for the other upgradable options they seem very close. I speculate that there is a difference in the upper receiver part. I have sent Del-Ton an email asking them to make the pictures bigger even if they only represent the stock kits (i.e. with no mods pictured).

Another newby question. With these kits, will I get a trigger guard for my lower?

This is how I would build my respective gun (I skipped barrel decision because I am not sure...but it will be chrome lined).

# 6 Rifle Kit -Barrel:DTI 16" 1x9 OR 7?? Chrome Lined Heavy Barrel
# 16 Rifle Kit / Rifle -Handguards:YHM Ext. Diamond Free Float Tube
# Rifle Kit / Rifle -BC:Standard Bolt & Carrier
# Rifle Kit / Rifle -Buttstock:M4 Buttstock - Black
# Rifle Kit / Rifle -Grips:A2 Grip - Black
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-Carrying Handle:None
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-Flash Hiders:Phantom 5C2 Flash Hider
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-Gas Blocks:Standard A2 Front Sight
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-Lower Parts:Lower Parts Kit with Rock River Arms 2 Stage Trigger
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-T Handle:Standard Charging Handle
# Rifle Kit / Rifle-Uppers:Flat Top Upper with T-Marks .

Cost $688 Plush shipping.

I will probably end up running this gun with Irons.

Thanks to nutnfancy for his Phantom 5c2 review.

Thanks to you guys for your time.

Welcome to arfcom ! !

Not much difference between the 16" rifle and M4 clone. The 1/7 twist will stabilize heavier bullets better then a 1/9. Really the barrel choice is just preference. You will get a trigger gaurd with the included lower parts kit you should receive with your order. The only thing you need now is a lower receiver.

Good luck and happy building.

I warn you though.....it is addictive !

You're off to a good start. Welcome to the site. BRD is not curable
Lots of worries on first builds-don't worry you'll fix it by building a better one next That's the best part of BRD.

Thanks for the reply.
Is there a negative side to having 1:7 twist if you go for say a 55 grain bullet?

Also is there much of a weight difference between the regular 16" rifle vs m4.
Will you be able to shoot a semi auto m4 profile barrel fast enough to heat it up and make an accuracy difference?

Also I just found another thread with a mine 1:7 vs 1:9 debate.

From what i read, I think 1:7 is the way to go.

Any counter opinions?

You are incorrect on the Spikes upper.  It is a complete upper so it comes with bolt carrier group and charging handle, as well as handguards.

You could combine it with a complete DS Arms lower for $180 and come out at $655 plus shipping.

Spikes is Tier 1 stuff...

just sayin...

ETA: their upper also includes their excellent carbine buffer.  I have one on its way to me right now.

Are you still short a buttstock?

Also wouldn't you say for the 160$ its worth it to go with the YHM fore end and the RRA trigger kit?

Newby question: Chromoly is not chrome lined right?

No... a "complete" lower means everything is there; butt stock, lower parts kit, and receiver itself.

The YHM forend is a matter of personal taste. I don't really feel the need for free floating on a carbine, as you should be able to shoot under MOA with handguards.  4 rail handguards will do everything a railed tube will do except mount optics, which is a non-issue in most cases.

As far as the RRA trigger, I am not a fan of it personally.  I find it to be counter-intuitive for snap shooting in a hunting or self-defense situation. It's a benchrest or match shooting trigger.  However, it's a 2 minute swap to install one later if you want it.

Of the two items you mention, I would pay for the YHM tube before the trigger, assuming we're talking carbines.

Chrome-moly is an alloy of steel using Chromium and Molybdenum in the recipe.  It is not the same as chome lining.  Chrome lining is when the inside of the barrel (the bore) and the chamber are coated with a thin layer of chromium.  This is done for corrosion resistance and ease of maintenance.  It also protects the bore and increases barrel life.  It has a slightly deleterious affect on accuracy, but this is very negligible and not a concern on most carbines.

Thank you for the information it is much appreciated. So 655 + shipping.
Isnt it  the spike kit at $450 upper  + 180 lower = $630. Just checking cause that would be important.
Del-Ton offers the chrome lined barrel, and flash suppressor at 548. This gives me 82 to play with for my lower receiver (assuming we match costs). I am losing the buffer, gaining Chrome, preferred flash hider.

I should check shipping costs on both. As for lower I am not concerned with maker, as long as it doesnt have a stamp that throws me off.

@the_great_snag:

I guess buying that upper at 450$ gives me the option of searching around for the exact butt stock I want as well as lower.

The flash hider is not necessarily a deal breaker, but the lining of the barrel is something to consider....hmmm.
