What all is different from a 5.56/.223 other than bolt/barrel and magazines? Looking at a Model 1 barrel. Is the lower and all parts the same? Gas system?
Thanks. |

Lots of info:
7.62x39 FAQ 7.62x39mm AR-15 configurations You can use a standard lower; some folks prefer stiffer hammer springs. ArmaLite's offering is a middy, most others are carbine gas although Model 1 does have rifle (20") barrels. |

I just built one and had absolutely no trouble at all and the thing runs like a bat out of hell. I used an AR Performance barrel and Super Bolt combo ($275 on sale right now by the way) and C Products mags. The thing has not missed a beat. And the Super Bolt is already modified so you get the proper firing pin protrusion to set off the hard primered Wolf steel cased ammo. With the standard AR firing pin and ARP Super Bolt, you get .038 protrusion and the indents are nice and deep and it has not missed a beat. Feeding from a fully loaded CP mag with Wolf HP steel cased ammo has been flawless. Use an upper with M4 feed ramp cuts or cut them yourself if you want to use an upper without the cuts. I had an upper on hand without the cuts and when the ARP barrel showed up with the M4 barrel extension, I cut them myself. Life could not be better. The headaches of jerry-rigged mags and modified firing pin are a thing of the past I am happy to say. By the way, the ARP barrel is 16 inches with a midlength gas system, .750 at the gas block, threaded 5/8 x 24.
Standard AR upper works fine. You do need a 7.62 x 39 bolt and mags, and I can recommend the ARP Super Bolt and Barrel combo and CP mags very highly. I am running the same FCG I run in all my ARs, a RR NM two stage trigger tuned by WOA and set to 3.5 pounds. |

Thanks BB!
I for some reason had my heart set on the Model 1 barrel and bought that. I didn't see many reviews for the ARP stuff, so I was a bit leery on buying from them. But Model 1 was about $5 more for the whole package anyways. I just can't wait to get everything in! |
| I bought the bolt and barrel from model one and changed one of my .223 over to 7.62x39. Had to use the factory hammer spring to get most surplus to go off and had to mill the firing pin for 20 thous more protrusion to set off wolf. Now it runs 100% and is one of my favorite rifles. May try to change out hammer springs since altering the firing pin to see how things run. |
| If I wanted to modify the bolt so it can make harder hits on the primer, can I just use a sanding block and take off .006" and then the rest of the .001" use a finer sand paper and then polish the rest? Or should I just use the lapping compound stuff like listed in the FAQ? Where can I get this lapping compound? |

I just got that pin today from model 1 it sticks out noticeably farther out of the bolt looks like it should work very well. I also ordered a LMT bolt today I will have to try that out when it comes in. I will be using my model 1 bolt and new firing pin till then. May get to test it this weekend. |

Dangit! I would have bought it with the bolt/barrel but didn't see it on their website. Bought a new pin yesterday for 5.56, I guess will be a spare now! ETA: Called em and BOY is it expensive! $25 with shipping... Oh well... It's a custom part right? Found that out in the military that when you only have 32 of something then prices tend to be 1,000x higher than what they should be! Supply and demand, such a wonderful thing! |
