To set the scene, lights were on, nobody was home....  I was putting a brake on my 18" DPMS fluted barrel for my AR-10.  I was using a 1/2 drive ratchet extension through the holes on the brake to turn it since I didnt have a big enough wrench to fit said brake.  I over clocked the brake, and went to turn it back to be vertical and the alignment pin in the barrel extenstion SHEARED OFF!  It bent the gas tube and severely ticked me off....

I was able to get the barrel out of the upper reciever, and now have the problem of what to do with the alignment pin.  Does anyone have a good idea for getting the barrel extension off the barrel?  Do I even have to to facilitate replacement of said pin?

Respectfully Submitted,

Stupid

Expensive lesson. It can be fixed. Only question is how much. Will a new barrel next week be better than a fixed barrel next month?

I see your point, but I know for a a fact that barrel blanks come, often times, with out barrel extenstions.  Thought process is that if you can put them on, you can take them off.  My rifles are projects and a hobby for me, so time really isn't an issue.

I think just the pin can be replaced.
They make a special ‘wrench’ for installing/removing barrel extensions, but I am not sure what it might take to line up an extension with an existing gas port.
You need to call tech support and see what they say and it could not hurt to call ADCO or someone like them to see what they suggest or would charge to fix it.

The barrel index pin is just pressed in. Remove the old pin & install a new one. Removing the barrel extension will not solve your issue-it will only make it worse. You will not be able to get a new extension or the existing one to line back up with the gas port. Barrel extensions are installed first for a reason & then the gas port gets drilled. Not the other way around.

Thanks all, if I can't get it out I'll try ADCO.

Warpig, I had thought it was pressed in, just wasn't certain.  Thanks.

Just as an update:

Last night I was able to get the old pin out by the careful use of a 1/16" drill bit and a tiny ez out.  I'm not suggesting anyone else do it that way, but it worked for me.

Now I'm just wating parts on all the stuff I broke along the way.
