I just got a new Smith and Wesson M&P15 OR and I am looking to put a quad-rail on it. I am looking in buying a YH Rail but I wanted to post here before I bought anything. Also, what size rail would I need, 8" Mid Size? Comments Welcomed.......

the OR is carbine length, so you're looking at 7". from the factory, S&W uses either a Troy carbine drop in for an OR model or one with an FSP, if it doesn't have standard handguards.  if you wanted to replace the gas block w/ a lo-profile one, you can get any one you want but right now, you're limited to Carbine length ones. i'd get the DD Omega, or the Troy drop in. hardly any work. if you were going to go free float and have to replace the barrel nut, i'd replace the gas block and get a 12" rail.

You will not go wrong with a YHM rail system.  Their work is excellent, especially considering the price.  My YHM mid-length rail is solid as a rock.

Given that you're going to have to pull the gas block anyway, if you feel like going to a low-profile block and a rail over the block, this is the time to do it.  YHM's low-profile gas block is a steal, or you can just grind down your existing gas block until it fits under the rail.  With a low-profile block in place, you can go as long as you wish with your rail system, and with a rail-mounted front sight, get a nice, long sight radius.  Up to you.

So I have to remove my gas block, no matter what 4rail i want to install on my M&P15OR?

if you want to install a ONE PIECE FREE FLOAT, then  yes, you'll have to have the gas block and flash hider removed prior.

if you go with just about any 7" 2 piece design you can install it yourself w/ no special tools or gunsmithing.  i just went with a daniel defense omega rail and am very pleased with it.

Just put a free float on my smith OR. Word of advice. If you are going free float with a low pro gas block, before removing factory block pin, remove set screw from bottom, and dimple barrel with 3/16" drill bit. The new low pro gas block with set screws will then line up perfect. Was a real easy install on my optics ready.
