what is the difference in sizes when looking at stocks.  I have seen mil spec and commericial. What is the difference and how do i know which one my lower uses?

Commercial can equal mil spec, depending, real question is mil spec vs el cheapo.  The mil spec buffer tube is machined down so that it is smaller in diameter than the threads, el cheap tubes are equal in diameter to the threads because it is cheaper to not machine down the buffer tube.  El cheapo stocks will fit on mil spec tubes, but will probably have some wiggle, and milspec will probably not fit well on el cheapo. I'm pretty sure there is a post on here with pictures showing the difference, or you could use da google.

I've read that "milspec" tubes are machined from a solid blank, whereas commercial tubes are rolled from a flat sheet.

I've also read that commercial & "milspec" parts don't mix because they are built to different specifications (obviously).

I've also read that the term "milspec" incites great confusion...

I stuck with "milspec" on my first (and only) build.

No, no, no…

It has to do with the dimensions of the tube…

Your lower will use either one…
There is really no better or worse as far as the dimensions go.

As with anything there are cheaply made products and well made products in both mil-spec and commercial.

I would say that you would have more stock options available to you if you have a mil-spec tube, but  that's about it.

Size in regards to length doesn't make that much of a difference, diameter of the tube will.  You can have "commercial" and "milspec" tubes of equal length and whatever weird slant is shown in the above picture, but you will have stock problems because the diameter dimensions are different. Thanks CONKLE73 for the illustration.
