| Can ak 74 barrels be used for this, or is there a good part supplier, trying to build the gun for less or close to the cost of the upper from SW. |

There's several threads covering this, if you try a search. Some guys used AK-74 barrels and did the custom work to get them working in an AR upper, others had custom barrels cut, you might contact Marty at Teppo Jutsu to see if he has anymore of the SS M4 profile ones he made, I have one of those and it's AWESOME.
I also had another one made by another barrel guy from just a blank. So you have several options. Also noted above is to just go with the S&W. |

Has anyone tried the Model 1 sales stuff? Once you add the bolt/carrier, you come out about the same $$$ as the S&W, but they may be more readily available.
Plus, they sell barrel assy's, so if you're into builting your own, there's that. Sadly, no midlength 16'... |
| I have now assembled 4 uppers using chrome lined virgin AK barrels. The cost of the barrels is about $100, AR barrel extension is $30. The most time consuming operation is the manufacture of the sleeve required to allow the use of the .750" gas block. Takes a total of about 2 hours lathe time to complete the task of conversion and they work well. At this point only 1 has been fired off a rest at 100 yards and the shooter informes me that with the surplus ammo he has groups that range from 3/4" to 1.5"..................I would say that was totally acceptable. Due to the light contour of the AK barrel you end of with a super light AR..........llc |
