What upper vice block are yall using for barrel installation and removal?  Will the Schuster holding fixture work, or what should I get?

I have a barrel vice block set, but I always have trouble with the barrel slipping in it and not being able to remove it.

Also, do yall really torque it back on during installation, or is it OK to just tighten and re-tighten a few times?

Rosin will help on the slippage.   Some barrel blocks have a rubber liner to add grip.
Barrel blocks can and will do the job.  In some cases they will give better results than receiver blocks

I use the Bushmaster block but had to get a Rat Worx (from Spikes) for my Vltor MUR.

Street talk for Block Worx?
Got one, as well as the Brownells.
If you work on a variety to uppers.  Both beat a pipe wrench from Lowes.
Some will argue

Well, I got the barrel off.  I tried several methods on the barrel vice and it fucking sucks.  I had to get two pieces of metal and put them on either side of the front lug.  Then I tightened it to the vice and used a long extension on my wrench.

When I go to install the new receiver, do I need to torque it on, or is it ok to just tighten and retighten a few times?

You got it. Did many a barrel with those two. Never a problem.

I believe the correct method is to snug it down pretty good and then loosen it 2-3 times then snug it down last time good and tight and then keep tightening it until you get to the next gas tube hole line up on your barrel nut. something like 50-100ft-lbs I think. Thats what I have always done and I haven't had any problems.

ETA I also do what you have done with a slim block of 1/4" metal in the vice and skip the block. I really should get a nice upper receiver block but so far that method has worked for me.

I use the same basic vise block and barrel wrench as shown above when installing barrels. The receiver threads should be lubricated using a grease that does not contain graphite. There is some concern that graphite lubricants can promote galvanic action between the aluminum receiver and the steel barrel extension.

Tightening 3 times is the accepted procedure. You should be able to get a notch in the barrel nut to line up with the gas tube hole in the upper receiver somewhere between 30 and 80 ft./lbs. of torque.

It's not worthless, its just not designed to be used for what you are using it for.

The barrel vise is a good tool for installing or removing flash hiders.
Good to hear you got the barrel off
