My newly finished AR does not always cycle correctly.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=409405&page=43 mine is about 1/3 down the page

it sometimes:
Miss-feeds
double fed(once)[I think this was because of a crappy mag, that I replaced with a magpul]
fails to eject, then feeds a round
ejects, then fails to strip a round
bolt does not always lock back when empty.
sometimes simply does not fire..

This is my first build and the biggest thing I noticed is that the hole in the gas tube does not match up perfectly with the whole in the gas block, it is off slightly(maybe 1 to 1.5mm)
would this be enough to cause this issue?  I can see how it could cause all of these issues if not enough gas can get through....

could it simply be that the bolt carrier is new and the shoulders are not polished

Buffer spring too strong?

Polymer mags?  It seemed to have fewer issues with steel mags, but the problem was not solved

Yes, the gas tube being that much out of line could be causing you problems.  Line up your gas block correctly and retest.  Your gas tube should be a free fit into the gas block and the upper receiver.  In other words, when you have it in the correct position, before you pin it to the gas block, it should slide easily back and forth without any binding whatsoever.  Also, when installed and pinned correctly, without  the charging handle installed, raise the back end of your upper, with the BCG to the rear.  It should slide easily into battery under it's own weight.  If not, try to see where it's binding or hanging up.

Get everything installed correctly and post your results.  Also, if you're free floating the barrel and not using a hand guard end cap, don't forget to leave a little gap behind your gas block and in front of the barrel shoulder, where the hand guard end cap would normally be located.  I don't recall the exact measurement, but I think that one of the threads at the top of this forum might have it or I'm sure someone can post it.

Let us know how you're making out.

It turns out that it was taking a while to break in. Also it was my first build and the first tutorial I looked at did not tell me that the Hammer spring sits on the trigger pin.  I have corrected the spring and now it never fails to set off a round (I had thought that I was using bad ammunition, but when I bought Federal and it performed worse then Wolf it sort of clued me in)

There is a dimple in the barrel for the gas block screw to sit, it leaves that space you mentioned.  The BCG does not seem to be hanging up anywhere either.

Thanks for your help.
