| I want to build my own 16in self defense AR. What advantage/disadvantage will a fluted barrel give me? |
old TOP here: There are other thoughts on "Flutted Barrels" They have to be thicker(larger diameter) to cut Flutes into them so the weight is more than "Pencil" barrels. Because there is More metal they do heat up Slower––BUT it takes longer to cool down. There are some thoughts about being Stronger(less likely to deflection when using a sling)––But that's powsily because there's more metal(thicker diameter) and yes they do look KOOL but cost MORE. I've got a JP Enterprises 24" SS Target upper that has Cooling-Fins under the Free-float H/G that I bought on impulse-BUT now I'm not sure that it was the "Smart" thing to do??? THANX––TOP

self defense gun
If that is the only purpose of the rifle, you have no reason for anything other than the lightest pencil barrel you can possibly find! Fluted or not, any larger diameter barrel is going to be heavier, and slower pointing. For a self defense rifle, I would want super fast handling, super short, and super light... and of course super reliable. I guess I interpret "self defense" as home defense though, and SHTF as a completely different kind of self defense. Anyway, home defense, the pencil barrel won't get enough fire to get hot so the handling is what you want. My 2 cents, from a noob.. |
