I recently built a 11.5" carbine using BCM upper mated to a Rock River lower. I put a VTAC front end on it, along with an EOTech XPS sitting on top of a RRA Dominator mount. The front sight base is prominent in my FOV looking through the EOTech. I have been using a similar setup on another 11.5" carbine and thought I had gotten used to it. In any event, I thought I would experiment with a low-profile FSB. I looked at all the options but I decided that I had the best gas block available with the factory FSB, but it was too tall.
So, being the experimenter that I am, I did a little research and decided to cut down the FSB. I removed it, got out my new air-powered tools and went to work. I cut it off, reshaped it, contoured it, polished it and finished it off with my dremel tool. A couple coats of engine paint finished off the project.
Here are some pics of the finished product. I thought it turned out real good.
After showing the carbine to a couple of buddies (without telling them of the FSB project) they asked, "Hey, that's a cool gas block, where can get one and how much?"
I answered "You can't afford this one".
I'll get the piece of weaver rail to attach my fold-down front sight this week.

Very nice work, I like it!
I've done that myself, and it takes some balls to go ahead and cut into a functional factory assembled assembly with the knowledge that you might f*** it up and incur great expense to make it right.
All is well that ends well.

looks good. I would have gone ahead and lopped off the sling and bayonet mounts while i was at it.

Good point on the sling mount, but I could never do without the ever-evil and dangerous bayonet lug.
