I just finished assembling an Ar-10 lower, and I have a question concerning the buffer detent. Does this device have any function other than to retain the buffer & spring when the upper is removed or tipped up? Is it out of action when the upper is installed? I used a collapsing stock, and the build guide I followed said to screw the buffer tube in until it contacted the shoulder of the detent but did not restrict movement. This was all well and good, but I then had to screw it back out enough to align the stock. The buffer is the only thing holding the detent in place.
thanks for any help... |

Sounds to me like the threads are jacked up on your receiver extension. When it's screwed in to the proper depth (to the shoulder of the buffer retainer), the notches on the extension for the collapsible stock should align with the receiver.
You don't "need" the buffer retainer, but be aware that the buffer is under spring tension and will go flying when you separate the upper and lower receivers if it's not installed. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| Thanks, kcr. If I understood more about the manual of arms for this think I would be more able to understand. Just what is the function of the buffer, and how does it react during the firing sequence? Does it travel rearward into the stock? The detent is in place but is held only by the buffer. If the buffer travels, what would contain the detent? |

The receiver extension retains the buffer detent and spring. On a properly built rifle, the buffer only contacts the detent when you remove the upper receiver. When you install the receiver extension, turn it in until it contacts the detent, which is being held in place by your thumb, then back it off slightly until the receiver extension is plumb. It shouldn't even be more than about 90 degrees off. If it still doesn't retain the detent or your buffer is retaining it, you have a problem.
I'd let someone who knows what are doing look at your rifle before you run any ammo through it. |
