Putting a barrel on a new mur and I was  wondering about the 80lb max on torqueing a barrel down. If the barrel were torqued to a number close to 80lbs, could it then be retorqued at a lower setting around 35lbs. and still work. I didn't know if the treads  would have been pushed out or stretched to a point we're they would hold at a lower setting. I read the post below about the tool from brownells  that was great to read. I was going to ask this question in that post but thought it might get lost. Thanks  also  for all the great info on that post about truing up your receiver below guys

if it was torqued to 80ft lbs and you take it apart and install a new barrel you can torque it to 30ft then line up gas tube hole. the torque is how much turning force is put on the nut. the threads should not be damaged. when i torqued mine to 30 i then lined up the gas tube hole and checked torque again just to see where it ended up and it was at 50ft lbs.

I think people are freaking out over this torque thing too much.Mine torqued out right at 80 and I have no accuracy problems.I zeroed the US army way.

Thanks for the responce guys. No freaking out that I see just a simple question. I have a barrel torqued to 80lbs. and it shoots just fine. I was wondering about the stress on the aluminum threads themselfs. Use to race motocross for years back in the day and saw aluminum do some surprising things. Never hurts to ask

Here's how I do it:





  • Clean the threads on the nut and upper with brake cleaner and hit with a clean toothbrush.

  • Apply Moly grease - AeroShell 33MS - to threads liberally.

  • Set torque wrench to 30 ft/lbs

  • Tighten and loosen barrel nut at least 3 times to 30 ft/lbs.

  • Pay attention to how you close you are to are lining up gas port hole wit barrel nut on the last tightening.

  • Loosen nut, set torque wrench to 35 ft/lbs and tighten up. Continue to add 5 ft/lbs and tighten until hole lines up, do not exceed 80 ft/lbs.



You'll line up before 80 damn near every time.
