I have been readin gon here for awhile and anywhere else I can get a good education on the AR 15 (so far this place is way better than anywhere else I've found) so here is my 1st newb question.

•Tools - There are several tools necessary to do a professional job that you are proud of. Please don't skimp here, as the quality of your work will suffer. Use the right tool for the job. Try and use brass punches whenever possible to reduce the chance of marring the finish.

Here is a list of all the tools you will need to build your AR-15.

This seems to be awefully dang expensive and from everything I read that was posted to the top of the Build It Yourself section everyone claims you don't need hardly anything.  So what's the scoop...this is pure marketing and just their way to get in your pockets?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply,

Lee

I made the mistake of buying some tools which i havent used yet!!  For example, the "slab sided bolt catch punch" mentioned by texjames.  I bought a POF Gen III lower,,,,which came with screws to be used instead of the pin.   (Damn Newbie!!)     And for the takedown pins i never even pulled the tool out of the package.  Live and learn i guess.
Ive decided patience is a virtue and will wait till i need a tool,,,to decide whether or not to buy one.  But im in no hurry since im waiting on the tax man to send me a stamp!  Your situation may vary.

Heres what I would go with if you are building a parts gun.
GI barrel wrench $10  Model 1
receiver vise block, Model 1, but from Fulton armory, $30
1/2" torque wrench, Harbor freight $20
roll pin punch set, Sears, $20
roll pin starters, Midway, $18
If you dont have one a 4 inch bench vise, Harbor freight, $20
magwell vise block, AR15pro.com, $10
I use an old bath towel to cover my workbench.
1/16. 3/32, 5/32 pin punches, Sears $3

If you are only going to put together the lower parts kit, and buying a complete upper, then just get the roll pin punch set and the roll pin starters, the pin punches  a small hammer and breakfree for your lube. Yoy might need a screw driver or allen head wrench for the grip screw depending on what comes in your LPK.

I'm getting ready to put my first lower together and ordered a tool kit here:

Lower Receiver Tool Kit in EE

Obviously isn't the "Snap-On" equivalent of AR tools, but I don't plan on doing this for a living - yet anyway.

Good luck with your build.

Dan.

-ETA-  I haven't received the kit yet, but the seller has extremely quick communication and I received a tracking number in less then 24hrs.

i havent even purchased an ar tool yet but i have made a pin spanner to torque a barrel to an upper. the most important tool is your head. put some thought in everything you do and you will be less likely to make mistakes. for what its worth the one tool i would most like to purchase is a quality armorors wrench happy building.

Thankfully you are not considering purchasing plain brass punches (not roll pin punches) from Sportsman's Guide...

They were pretty cheap - cheap enough that I can consider them to be disposable - luckily so, because even removing the front sight from a Ruger 10/22 turned out to be too great a strain for one of the punches, as it got bent and the tip got chewed to hell trying to do the job.

I have a better quality set of roll pin punches from Brownells, and I have higher hopes for those...

i have some snap on punches and some mayhew roll pin punches as i am a mechanic and they can take some abuse. i prefer quality american made tools but that tool kit cost as much as my snap on road chest did 3 years ago.
