So I finally got to take my new partial build out for a little action. I'll give a little back information for those who did not get to see my "Build completed" thread. I bought a lower and put the the parts together myself, then I bought a completed STAG upper. Well it finally arrived a couple Fridays ago. This is the first AR I have ever owned. In fact, I have only shot a total of 10 rounds through an AR, one time before, so I am very new to the platform.
Took her to the PIT, which is state land used as a make shift range here in Michigan. It is about 75 yards, give or take a few, to the base of the dirt berm. I set up a paper target at the bottom and a couple milk jugs filled with water about 1/4 of the way up the berm. This was the first time out with the new AR, so it had not been zeroed. I am running a Bushnell Trophy red dot (zero magnification) and MidWest Industries front and rear flip up sights.
First shot with the red dot and I found paper. I quickly zeroed it in. I stopped after the first 5 rounds to re-lube during this break in/optic zeroing session. I cleaned the gun after putting it together the first day and used oil, but for re-lubing during this session I was only useing BreakFree CLP. I switched from paper to the water jugs and quickly made watter fly. I stopped after 20 rounds and re-lubed again. I switched to my irons and again found paper very quick. I plan on taking it to a real range with a 100 yard range on it to get a percise zero.
So with one 30 round mag down, it was time for some fun. So I set a new paper target out and 5 bowling pins up. I started blasting away. Man I was grinning from ear to ear, this thing is a blast. So all in all I shot 620 rounds today. A mixture of Remingtin, Wolf (new polymer coated and old laquer coated), Silver Bear, PMC, and Federal Frangible. I also had 20 rounds of some ploymer cased ammo, I do not recommend that, light as hell but sticks to a hot chamber. Out of 620 rounds, I had one failure to feed at about half way through. It was a Wolf case that jammed when being fed. I used 10 different P-Mags, 3 USGI mags and 1 Cammega easy mag. I had several failure to hold the bolt back after the last round, all from P-Mags. I am not to worried about the mags not holding the bolt back, minor inconvienece. I am happy there was only the one mis-feed. All in all it went very, very well. I must say that holy shit does this gun get hot after a few hundred rounds. I had to lay it down on a few occasions, I thought my skin was going to melt off and I was wearing gloves. My next purchase will be a forward grip, that should help a little about burning the shit out of my hands.
