OK, I know that this is most likely a much repeated topic here but I am new so please cut me a little slack................  I am looking to buy a stripped lower and a lower kit to begin with.  Then I want to get all of the other items to complete the AR15 over time..............  Basically, I could get a new AR15 if I put it on the Visa but I would prefer to build it over the next few months with cash.

I am located in AL and would like to know where I can get a quality Lower from.  I have read that RRA Lowers are pretty good but I have no idea where to begin to look.  I do not have a FFL nor do I have a FFL that I am good friends with but I would pay a common percentage to a local FFL to get a lower.  What is the normal percentage for firearm transfers assuming I can find a decent lower?  Please do not suggest that I should buy a new gun, I want the experience of building the firearm.

As I said, I am sorry if this is a repetitive question but I do not have a lot of time to search.....................

Are their gunshows in your area? Do you plan to attend them to find decent "out the door" prices? If you're looking to just order things for delivery then here's a few places I would suggest calling up for a good lower at a low price right now (not including FFL transfer/background):

Spike's Tactical - 100$ +shipping (call to order, mention ARFCOM group buy)

Tactical Machining - 105$ delivered (call to order, mention their website)

Anvil Arms - 100$ +shipping (call to order, mention their website)

Essential Arms - 105$ +shipping (online or by phone, get Tough Coat)

Aero Precision - 100$ +shipping (online, check AIMSurplus.com)

First, go check with your local dealers.  Some of them might have stripped lowers in stock.  If not then you can ask around and see which one has the best transfer fee.

Also realize that you are going to need to buy or borrow some tools.

I am pretty sure the Spike group buy is over so they are back up to 170ish.  But I would recommend going to your local funshop.  Mine has 10 or so stripped lowers in stock right now, charles daley -139, SW 149, DTI 149, and ATI 135.  Roughly be 155 out the door for the cheapest.  Here the transfer fees range from 35-45.  I have heard one place does it for 20 but I have not confirmed it as of yet.  Be sure to call and confirm with your ffl before you purchase.

Give Spike's a call, they'll work with you - especially for a new customer.

Definately hit local shops first.  Otherwise you are going to add 10-25% to the cost of the lower because of a transfer fee.  If you take cash (actual cash not checks cash) in and get something that they have in stock they will probably cut you a decent deal and you won't have the fee.  Do some reading to find out what the reputable manufacturers are on this website (some have links at the top of this screen) and then find one locally.  I found out that a friend of a friend was the FFL that sold everything to the cops in my area (he was a cop).  He sold to us and we got a good deal.  You could try to find out who that is locally.  The other option is hitting up a local gun show.  You will be able to put together a list of people that probably sell out of their basement and you would never know that they are right down the street.  They are good to know because you can order through them or they may very well willing to lend you tools or help you put it together.  One way to skip the gun show and find find a local dealer is to go the the hometown board located ^ and ask if anyone is nearby!  Hope this helps.

Well, I picked up a stripped lower from a local dealer.  It is a Sabre Defence brand.  It was cheap so I am not complaining.  Now I need a M4 kit.  Any suggestions?  I am not looking for a match rifle right now.  I just want a good performing M4 that I can upgrade in the future.

Thanks again!

I bought the RRA lower parts kit and like it a lot (single stage).  You can buy the single stage or two stage trigger with the kit and the two stage is something like $80 more expensive if I recall.  I got mine off of riflegear.com since it was as cheap as any place that I could find it and they had them in stock.

check out the vendors here or model 1 or delton.  they have a little bit of a wait but probably he lease expensive way to get a complete rifle kit sent to you.  You could buy a Lower Parts Kit for $60-80 and get a complete upper and a stock of your choice as well.  Stocks are running about $60ish+ for a used one with buffer tube, buffer and spring.   Upper are going for around $500 and some have the BCG and Charging handle

Well, I ordered the RRA LPK a few minutes ago.  Now I need a buttstock kit...  What is the difference between a Mil-Spec and a commercial grade kit?  Which one should I go for?  I was looking at the RRA stock kit as well.  Should I go for it?

The tools are not much of a problem for me as I have about any tool you could imagine.  I have a jeep so I do A LOT of work on it in addition to home maintenance and general "I want that tool itis".  I do not have the AR-15 barrel wrench but I plan on ordering a complete upper in the future so I do not think that will matter.........  Will it?  While we are on that topic, where is a good place to get a decently priced M4 upper w/BCG & CH?

This is a budget build so please do not tell me about $200 stock kits.  I will upgrade it in the future but I want something I can shoot soon.  Hell, for me half the fun in any hobby is the building phase and then the upgrading phase............

Thanks to all for all the help you all have provided.  I am very impressed with the professionalism of the membership here!

Mil-spec is better, and RRA is commercial but would still suffice.

You do not need the barrel wrench unless you are piecing the upper receiver, so no you will not need it.  BCM has some uppers as does Pete at Legal Transfers with cheap RRA uppers.

You can definitely piece your AR with a budget, just keep watching the classifieds like a hawk. Dont worry about getting used parts either like the stock kit.

that is exactly how I build my ARs. Nothing is more fun that stalking the gun shows looking for that one part and when you find it you act like you stole it and sneak out before somebody tries to grab it out of your hands. LOL

It takes at least 6 months for me to build a AR. Budgets are tight and I like to hunt for parts.

Well, I went a little over what I wanted to spend on the stock and got the RRA Operator stock.  Not sure how long I will have to wait for it though.................  Complete upper is next on the list.  Any suggestions?

FWIW - I went the same route as you a year ago. In Memphis, I found one shop that had one DPMS lower. It seemed over priced, and they did not seem too happy in being my AR parts supplier. Eventually I went to a gun show, and made a deal on a DPMS lower and a LPK.

Find a FFL that their motive is provide a service not to rip heads off. I am in Austin now, and found one that will transfer for $25. He is does alot of business and is happy charging $25. Go to the sites advertised here and look for there FFL list, and find one close to you. Post in the Hometown forum for one.

I finally got all my parts, got it built, and am very happy with the result. Building AR's is a hobby in itself and great fun. I have two more lowers, almost done with AR #2 and planning AR #3.

At first I was overwelmed with all the part sites, but have saved a few to my favorites and I dont spend so much time looking for parts.

I would buy parts that work, get your first build under your belt, read the this site, and start on AR #2, and build your dream AR.
