I am workin on my first build.  I already have the lower and now im lookin for an upper.  Not sure if I want to build it or just buy it.  I want a 16 or 18 stainless barell, larue tactical midlength freefloat forearm. and a flip up gas block front sight.  on a flattop....gotta throw the good ole Eo on it.  and suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

buy it.  I built my first upper and for the cost I'd rather buy a new upper and have it made and be able to shoot instead of wait for parts, buy the tools, take the time to put it together and shoot it than put it together.

Youre looking at spending about $30 for a wrench, same for an action block, probably want to have a set of punches, time to put it all together. ordering the parts and paying shipping.....you could probably spend less buying a new upper from one of the vendors or finding something in the EE.  I build my first one and I would have rather bought one, figured out how it all works shooting it and cleaning it and then build one while I had one to shoot.

You can also get stripped uppers (no forearm

If you know your skills and mechanical limits, you have the time, $$$ and tools. No problem. The most critical part of the building an AR is the proper assembly of the gas system once you got that to function you will have flawlessly operating weapon. So if you have a good mechanical aptitude and you use some patients you should be very pleased with the outcome. After that you shouId be able to troubleshoot must problems with the operation of the weapon. I think if you own it, you should understand how it works and this gives you that opportunity. I suggest you get the following books and manuals first. Give it a shot. Good Luck.

LaRue has some nice videos showing the install of the quad rail systems. Check out there website.
