This may sound like a dumb question, but this past weekend I installed a YHM Spectre length Diamond hanguard and two piece Spectre gas block on my Stag carbine. At this point I am looking to buy a Phantom flash hider, but am curious how I should go about properly installing it since there is no longer a front sight tower to support the barrel during the torquing of the flash hider. Any recommendations? Would I be better off looking at a Vortex instead?

No problems installing the Phantom on a barrel without an FSB.

Get a set of barrel vise blocks.  I've heard of some guys making their own out of wood but I've never tried.

The reason I was worried a bit was because I am looking at the 5C1 flash hider and will need to properly time the location of the flash hider. Would the barrel vise setup scratch the barrel during use? Just curious as I have never used one before.

I have the barrel blocks linked above.

I simply place two pieces of leather between the barrel and the blocks, one on either side.

No marring and looks professional when done.

Just to clarify...

If you did have a FSB did you just intend to clamp that in your vise and put the Phantom on??

+ vise has worked for me 5 or 6 times.

No, I had not really intended to just clamp the front sight base in my vise. The main issue is that without the front sight base installed, there really isn't anything to hold onto (so to speak). I have installed the standard Phantom flash hiders in the past by hand since they didn't need to be timed, but  the 5C1 is different.
