Then put the shorter one in.  It's only function is to align the ASAP plate with the groove in the receiver extension and keeps it from turning under torque.  As long as the key fits into the groove you're ok.

ETA:  You may have to jiggle and tap them to go in, I had to do that with both of mine.  Are you sure you have a commercial extension?

yup positive its a commercial extension.  the smaller key wil slide right in but the longer one is a no go.  should i just file the longer one down a tidbit?

Yous should be able to file it down with no problem,  Just make sure you leave enough that the castle nut captures it when you tighten it.
