What is the best way to remove a bayo lug and then refinish the metal to look like new?

Hack saw. I suppose you could parkerize it, but black spray paint has worked for me on that little spot. If you're trying to turn a front sight base into a low-profile gas block, just spend the $50 on a real one. Trust me, its not worth the effort.

Carry on...

I'm sure he is asking to be compliant in NY.

To the OP, you can cut it off with a cut off wheel then smooth it out on a bench grinder. You can touch it up with some BBQ paint.

Where part of the bayo lug would you recommend chopping? This is to meet the compliance of New Yorkistan.

I would say the part that holds the bayo.

The lower part on the left with the "T" groove.

Obviously the bayo lug, but at which point on it.

I do not know your laws, but everyone I seen cut was at your yellow line. then round it to make it pretty.

you could weld some lumps on it so a bayonet doesn't attach. If it can't accept a bayonet, it's not a bayonet lug. The if you ever move, you can grind the lumps off.

Odds are the lug is useless anyways.

Unless it s a true M-4 barrel w/ welded extended FH or 20" rifle a standard bayo won't fit right.

Cut & grind.

If you want to try to replicate the texture of the surface of the rest of the FSB grab a heavy hammer and some different rough grades of

carborundum sandpaper.

Tap the hammer on the sandpaper laid pace down on the part to imprint the rough texture onto the surface.

When you get the texture you want apply cold blue or paint the FSB.

You can cut off the entire lug, or you can just grind off the extended sides to the bayonet will not attach.  This leaves the profile and looks much better, I have seen some of the ones ADCO does like this.

Up to the OP, but cutting off at the bright yellow line is probably the safest, and whats the point of having anything more than that?  Like stated, without a proper flash-hider at the proper distance from lug to mount a bayonet its worthless anyway.  There are posts about cops hassling guys on the range for BS because of their own personal interpreation of the law.  Unless you know exactly what the law clearly states and there is NO possible way to interpret it otherwise; all you need is for some rabid hysterical anti-gun nut to turn you into another hysterical anti-gun nut in a position of authority (which I'm sure there is NO shortage of such in New York) and you be eyeballs deep in lawyers bills as they try to settle the interpretation of bayonet lug and whether they can grab headlines by making an example of you.

You gotta love liberals, they are scared to death someone might bring a knife to a gunfight. What logical argument is there to ban a bayonet lug on a rifle?  Its all emotional, end around rulings to ban rifles that look scary, but I digress.

Yellow line. I used a hacksaw, then cleaned it up with a hand file.

I don't think he's talking about defying the (admittedly quite "pekerheaded") New York law.  I think it's more about avoiding places that have "peckerhead" laws in the first place-and I am in complete agreement with him on that.

such great insight for the op to help with his question.

op- will you be removing the front sight post to cut it? if not i would rap the barrel in something tough enough to withstand a nick from the grinder/blade/sander.

My local gunsmith/FFL is going to blind pin the barrel for me so I just told him to take care of the bayo lug while he's at it.
