I have shot pistol competition for years, and have one AR-15. I am looking to build another AR with my son. I am considering a complete upper, and build the lower only. I am extremely mechanically inclined, and have worked on pistols for years, but I do not want to build the upper. I want to build a 16 inch A-2 CAR. I am not looking for a competition gun, but one that is reliable, and constructed of quality material. I do not want to buy junk.
What is a good brand to purchase? Will any upper fit on most any lower ? Any brands to avoid? |

....Will any upper fit on most any lower ?... Yes, any upper should fit any lower. Sorry can't give you much advice on brands, as far as stripped lowers there are only a few brands to avoid, most will perform equally well. I just put together my first upper this week, it was NOT difficult at all, don't rule it out. |

Take a look at Brownell's AR build series and see if building an upper from scratch is still out of the question. I've never done it, but I would have if parts had been more readily available and I didn't need so many tools. Building a lower is easy and can be done easily within an hour. Building an upper is where you run into needing to understand torque values and what not, so it would probably be more valuable if you want your son to learn more than how to drive in some pins.
As far as fit, you're probably best off if you get the same brand upper and lower. Most uppers will fit most lowers, but it's not guaranteed. ETA: The list of good brands far outweighs the bad ones. If you stick to a mainstream brand (Rock River Arms, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Stag, Lewis Machine and Tool, Larue Tactical, Spikes, etc) you shouldn't have any problems. |
| I'd forget the A2 for now. Here is why. Bravo still has LMT Flat Top M4's in stock for $485. I'd get that. Having a flat top will leave more options available for you when the inevitable desire to modify and add accessories hits. Get the Bravo charging handle, try to find a quality BCG (Bravo, Colt, LMT..... RRA if you have to) I think PK's has some RRA BCG right now. Get the Bravo stock Kit for appx. $80. For sights start out with the MBUS it's about $55. For the lower I'd call essential arms and get one of their lowers, proabaly find a Stag or RRA LPK for it. That right there is a simple yet quality set up that allows you room to grow as the desire to trick the gun out comes. |
