I have a RRA CAR upper/barrel combo coming, what gas block would be a good choice to install. I am leaning towards a YHM short version low profile Would this then allow me to install a longer than carbine length FF HG?. Let me know what you think.Post some pics if you have them. Thanks..

You can install a longer than carbine length FF rail/hg if it will fit over the Gas Block.  The smartest thing to do would be to pick your FF rail/hg and then look for the Low Pro GB that it recommends or from the same manufacturer.  BUT, the troy and YHM smallest low pro gb are about as small as you can get and seem to fit underneath just about all the rails.

I am thinking about a 10" FF on my carbine also. I am looking at the Midwest Industries low profile gas block. $45 and looks pretty small or short, which ever way you want to look at it.

you can save money by cutting the bayonet lug, sling mount and sight off of the FSB with a dremel tool.  There is a tutorial on this site

If you plan on your rail system covering your gas block then I'd suggest doing a dremel job on a regular front site block and just using that. I'm a firm beleiver in tapered pins instead of the set screws that are used on low-pro gas blocks.

I went with using a dremel to cut and shape the FSB into a low profile gas block, identical to the one on the site here, then used krylon bbq paint on it (or if you have access to a sandblaster and gunkote).  I then put a 10 inch troy rail over it and it looks pretty damn good.

What about the midwest industries lo pro? I like the sloped angle along the top. How does that compare to the Troy or YH ?

When you take the front standard front sight off does it leave 2 rings on the barrel where it used to be (like scratches)?

yes it will have 2 rings around the barrel, at least the three FSB's I have taken off did. I would cut the FSB down but want to keep it for returning the barrel to a stock set up later on down the road maybe.
