I have had this SP 1 upper laying around since I bought My first SP 1 in 1975 and put a Fwd asst upper on it  , I would like to use it to build a Retro 601 useing a NDS lower and  a Young Slick sided chrome bolt carrier , My only consern is the large front take down hole  , My plan is to make a alum or steel plug for the hole and then redrill it to match the lower's hole , then use a NDS 601 take down pin , can anyone see any problem with this ?

An offset bushing would be less complicated, but you may want to ask in the retro forum.   I recall seeing a discussion some time back about using the method you are asking about.

if you look at a offset bushing ,it  is very thin on the thin side. it would make more sense and be easier to install a offset bushing, either semi- or fully permanantly , to your upper. i've heard of silicone for easy removal to epoxy for permanence. if you don't secure it , it rotates and is a pain. whatever you choose, do it right the first time.
i would would shy away from permanantly gluing a bushing to my upper, but i'm told i have commitment issues. leave your options open, might come across a sp-1 lower!  it could happen....
small pin uppers are very common, obviously. there are a finite amount of sp-1 uppers and they aint no more!
