Hey Guys -
I'm planning a new AR15 build and wanted to do my version of a Recce carbine. I have almost all of the components picked out, but I am unsure on a few of the items. Below you will find everything listed out that I am considering and would love any feed back you may have about any of the items. The two items in particular that I'm not dead set on are the Optics (Leaning towards an ACOG most likely a 4x model), and a suppressor (Leaning towards M4-2000 mainly because that's what is on order for my SBR build). Any feedback would be awesome! Spikes Tactical Lower Receiver with Bullet Markings Magpul UBR Stock (If I can find one at a decent price) Stag Ambi LPK (I'm a Lefty) Geissele SSA Trigger (Again if I can find one at a decent price) Norgon Ambi Catch PRI Gas Buster KNS Gen 2 Mod 2 Trigger Pins BCM F/A Bold Carrier Group (If anyone else has a better suggestion for this type of rifle, I'd be open to it) Magpul MIAD Magpul Trigger Guard Larue 13.2" FF Rail Noveske 14.5" Afghan barrel (I was planning on having this Gun Koted by ADCO, can someone confirm that this is possible on this barrel?) Generic Upper Receiver (Haven't picked one out yet so I'm open to suggestions) Troy Folding BUIS Trijicon TA31 (I'm pretty much set on an ACOG for now, just wanted to see other people's thoughts on which model would be good for this type of a build) AAC M4-2000 (Again, I'm leaning this way since I have one on order for my SBR, but if there are better options out there for this type of "precision carbine", I'd love to know about them) I have the tools to assemble this myself, but since I was going to have the barrel gun koted by ADCO anyway, I'd figure I'd have them install the barrel and FF Handguards while it was there. So there it is, any feed back would be awesome! Thanks in advance for your help. ***Edit*** I'd also like to add that the intended purpose of this rifle is an all around general purpose carbine, SHTF carbine with the ability to go out to 400 yards. I may also use it for some 3 gun stuff as well. |

Instead of a Gissele trigger, have you considered having Bill Springfield do a trigger job on the standard components? $50 for a 3lb. trigger is an awfully good deal, especially with the reputation he has developed around here.
Also, since you said your a lefty, why not build it left handed? Get yourself a left handed upper from Stag (I think someone else makes one, but I don't remember off the top of my head.), and make sure you order a left handed bolt carrier group when you order your barrel. You were going to order a matched barrel and bolt, weren't you? |

Hi TCS007
No I hadn't considered having a trigger job done, but I will have to look into that. As far as the left handed upper...I've fired a few before and didn't really notice a difference in usability vs a standard ar15 so I'll probably shy away from that and stick with a standard upper and lower. As far as a matched bolt, I hadn't given it much thought as I'm new to building this type of rifle. |

Anyone else? I don't do lefty guns. I'm left eye dominate and right handed. I shoot rifles and pistols left hand dominate, right side weak hand. I can see watch the bolt lock back on an empty mag, not just feel it. Feel sorry for you righties doing your double feed malf drills, be bless that it doesn't happen that often. or shouldn't. IDK how much you maintain your weapon. Your rifles might be one thing, but your weapon should be like your gun, its the one within easy reach, day or night, you know where it is, and how to work it. Failure is to be expected, corrected, or secondary action taken. You could go with a badger Ambi handle and seal it. You'd have to find one though. Does the Stag ambi LRPK come with an ambi safety? You don't need that much rail, IMHO. TA31F is a decent all-around, and it is what GI Joe uses, and It is what I have had since 2004. Great glass, great optic, eye volume is too short, field of view is much, much more than needed. TA11F, now you're talking. If you decide to slim it up, shorten the rail, go with a barrel mounted flip, and mount a light, and a TA33 in a return to zero mount, well, just don't post pics before I do. Brett |

Thanks for the input Brett -
I'm like you where I'm left eye dominant and left handed, but prefer the standard rifle setup. The Stag Ambi LPK includes the ambi safety selector, just waiting for it to get here... I'm not 100% set on the rails, I mainly really like the look of that 13.2" rail with the 14.5" barrel. But I'll take another look at the rail system for the rifle... As far as the ACOG, thank you for your feedback. I own both an Aimpoint M3 and Eotech but really have no time with an ACOG. I'll take another look at the model you suggested. A lot of your issues with the TA31F are ones I've been reading about in the reviews of that optic versus the other options. Thanks Brett! Does anyone have any input on a suppressor for this kind of rifle? Would the m4-2000 be an ok choice? As I mentioned I'm looking at it because I will be getting one on my SBR. ***Edit*** This is what I'm thinking of doing. I shamelessly ripped this off from another member of these forums, but this is the basic idea of what I'm going for. http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4229/swr.jpg |

No problem, I'm pretty opinionated. Agree where I can, play my own drums where I don't. 2. not quite. I'm a cross dominate, left side shooter. As a benefit, my "weak" side hand is actually my strong side hand. It has all of the coordination and probably more than my strong side shooting hand. Just not the practice or the really strong burnt in muscle memory. I write with my right hand, and I shoot hoops and pool right handed. Baseball too, but I never liked to field the ball. Just hit. Its better being cross eye dominant hitter or shooter in some ways because you have more of an angle to see before its time for the collision. And I won the free throw shooting contest at summer basketball camp after 6th grade out of 130 guys. not too shabby, considering that some of them were 2 years older than me at the time. My hoop at home was only 9 foot 6.5" and had the post area on well-packed clay soil with a sweeping transition area at about 13 foot to the asphault road. You don't have to move much to learn how to shoot free throws Shooting pool? I'll switch if the table crowds me and its close enough, but otherwise, I stick with the hand thats comfortable and most practiced. Plus, you always get condensation on your beer, and the aiming hand needs to slide, so I drink the beer with the right, and aim with the left. If you smoke, I've once heard it put, well, what hand to you lite your smokes with? If you've never skied before, stand shoulder width apart, toes even, balanced weight, and have someone give you a suprise push! Whichever foot goes forward, goes forward in the ski if you're talking salom. I'm goofy. 3. Yeah, they look cool, until you start putting stuff that far out. And it just kills the gun movement. 4. 36 and something feet FOV at 100? Overly much for a 4x both eyes open optic. 8mm exit pupil is fine, its enough, but more is better for freedom with head positioning, and like I said, 36 feet FOV, versus like 29 for a TA11F at 3.5x35. A TA33 is about the same for eye relief and is the same for exit pupil, you just give it up on the FOV, its like 19.6 ft at 100. But you give it up in weight too. No free lunch. Ever swap out a TA31F for a Aimpoint? at night? With decent tac light? A 4x32 ACOG is NOT a do-all optic, I used to think so, but I've since learned the errors of my ways. I had to find out for myself, but I did find out. Brett |

As far as a matched bolt, I hadn't given it much thought as I'm new to building this type of rifle. It has 7 lugs, it will lap itself in, headspace is a nominal spec based on reusable guages. The only truly reliable headspace guage for relibility in a semi-full-auto gun is one time use, and very loud. Ever check dims on factory ammo? There is probably a lot looser headspace between the left and right ear of the average operator of the weapon, than there is between the weapons chamber, bolt, and cartridge. It just really doesn't matter as much as some people think. Brett |

So after some consideration and the feedback I received back from you guys, I'm decided to swap out the Larue 13.2" rail for a Daniel Defense 12" Lite Rail. To that end, does anyone have a picture of this setup...
Novseke 14.5" Afghan Barrel (Or any other 14.5" barrel for that matter) DD 12" Lite Rail and a Suppressor of some sort. I'm curious as to how this would look. Thanks! |
