Just taking a break from my attempt to remove a pinned low profile gas block.  For the life of me I can see absolutely NO REASON for a barrel to be sold by itself with a gas block pinned on it...  Is there a reason for doing it that I can't think of, or is it just to frustrate people?

I've heated the gas block with a hair drier, soaked the pin in WD-40 and slightly mushroomed the pin (not tapered) on one side pounding on it.  One thing I haven't figured out is a good way to keep the barrel/gas block from rotating at all while striking the pin.  I have it clamped but it still rocks a little when I hit it so I think I'm not getting a full strike on it.

Any hints?  I'm hoping re-installing it will be easier, I plan on freezing the pin and heating the gas block....

I read a week or so ago that ATF ( tranny fluid ) mixed 50% - 50% with acetone makes a great prnitrating oil ?

Take proper chemical precautions & use in well ventalated place ( outside ) .

God bless

I had enough trouble getting the pins out of a standard front site post.  And you can lay it flat.  Good luck

Be sure that you have the correct size punch and try driving it out from the other side. Sometimes you have to really get on the hammer to get them to move.

Thanks guys, I'm probably going to bring it in and watch a local gunsmith take it out.  I think I should find a 'beater' for me to practice on instead of a match barrel.  At this point $40 seems quite reasonable to me lol

hit it on the other side with a bigger hammer and make sure its supported, much cheaper than 40.00.

Supporting it is the problem that I'm having.  I'm clamping it down but when I strike it the barrel does move.  I thought about making a jig to support the barrel while striking it instead of the clamp method.  I just wish Noveske wouldn't pin the freaking gas block on the barrel when they sell it...
