I know it's been discussed before, but in my efforts to do everything right, I'm tempted to disassemble the bolt to check the headspace with hte brownells HS gauge I have. Is it worth doing, and if so, what's the best way to get the ejector out? having some issues holding and pushing the pin all at once.
Thanks, Texan |

Yes, the ejector should be removed to check the head space. Whether checking the head space is worth it or not is simply a matter of piece of mind. I have a little Lyman punch set that has an interchangeable 3 head 4 oz. hammer, one head is brass faced and is ideal for this job, as well as a few punches in various sizes. The storage rack that comes with this set is a routered piece of hardwood that has a place inlet for each piece of the set. I place the bolt carrier in the hammer void of the storage rack. With one hand I can slightly depress the extractor while holding the punch in the "V" of my index finger and thumb. With the other hand I can tap the roll pin out. You can literally push the roll pin out with the punch on many BCG's. Sounds like a lot to do but it works out well and is fairly simple, it takes only a few seconds. Any channeled piece of wood that will support the BCG would work as well as my storage rack, I just happen to have the storage rack at hand when reaching for the punch and hammer. |

Get a military field gage if you can find one - it's cut to clear the ejector and extractor so you don't have to remove them. Alternatively, you can take a regular .223 gage and grind away the places where the ejector and extractor would be. Here are pictures of my Forster .223 Field Gage so modified: http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/stealthyblagga/223FieldHSGageModifiedObliqueView.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/stealthyblagga/223FieldHSGageModifiedSideView.jpg http://i244.photobucket.com/albums/gg34/stealthyblagga/223FieldHSGageModifiedBaseView.jpg HTH My Colt M16 spec.gauge doesn't look like that ......I remove both, Ejector and extractor before I check the headspace. Brownell's gauge Correct - your headspace gage is like mine, except I Dremelled mine for clearance so I don't have to remove the extractor/ejector - that was the point I was trying to make to the OP. I have seen pictures of headspace gages that had been turned down on a lathe so that the rim area was completely removed to clear the extractor/ejector, presumably to make it easier to check a bunch of M16s without having to disassemble each one... my understanding is that these were GI/military issue gages, or at least they were sold on the EE as such a couple of years back.
