I'm hoping to build an AR to plink with and shoot varmints.

I'll probably put 2000 rounds through it over the next year.

Do I need a Chrome lined barrel?

Thanks!

Not really-pros and cons. good luck getting a straight answer. cost is not that significant, availability is.

You don't "need" a chrome lined barrel.  However, chrome will be easier to clean and should help with case extraction.

Shoot varmints? You need a stainless barrel. Seriously, chrome lining the barrel degrades accuracy in favor of long life and reliability, however stainless gives you the long life with accuracy because of the better rifling.

No chrome lining for varmint accuracy.

I just built two varmint rigs to blast pdogs with too.  Used a pair of Lilja barrels.  Broke one in last week.  Shoots fantastic, and she doesn't copper foul a bit.  I really like the first.  If the bastards at Young Mfg weren't screwing me over on a BCG, I'd have broken in the second one by now too & would report on that (another story).

My only concern (at first) on the Lilja was the 1in8 twist rate.  Thought I'd want something slower for lighter varmint bullets.  After working up test rounds and checking ballistics, I'm actually glad for the faster twist and ability of the heavier bullets to reach out and smack 'em.  Cost was a bit of a sting too, but they are a top-notch barrel, and they are available now (in stock).
