| Hello guy's, I'm throwing together my first AR and everything went smoothly until the end. When I tried to attach the upper the takedown pin wouldn't fit through the upper. Its smooth as a babies ass through the lower, but its real tight in the upper. Its actually too tight to go in past a 1/4". I tried tapping on it with a hammer for a few minutes, but no dice. Its a Vltor VIS-1 mated to a Denny's lower. Any ideas? |
| Its the front pin hole. I actually tapped it into submission although it took a good while. Its still very tight and I'm wondering if I should have Vltor make it right, or just wear it in a little. Anybody think knocking the pin around with a hammer for 10 minutes was a bad idea? I don't want to wind up with a damaged upper down the road because I had to loosen up a takedown hole. |

Too late to worry about that now.....NOTHING on a rifle should be hammered for 10 minutes except maybe a zombies head... or the users

After the coin I spent on throwing this baby together I was very careful. The art of tapping and persuasion was thus utilized, I'm just wondering if it will loosen up over time, or if I should send it in. |

So you can get the rear pin in no problem and just the front is giving you the issue?
Check the front pin itself for any flash or a bur where they machine the groove in it for the detent. I had one that had a bit of a bur on it and it was hell getting it to go through the holes. A little work with a jeweler's file and the bur was gone and problem fixed. While the pin is out of the lower, check it to see if it goes into the hole in the upper by itself. |
| Does the pivot pin go in easily without an upper in place? Typically a "tight" upper-to-lower fit will make either the pivot pin, the takedown pin or both very tight. It should NOT take anything more than a whap or two with a soft mallet to get either in with the tightest of uppers, though. Whether the lower or the upper is too tight, there's something wrong. |

Its actually tight when I run it through the upper by itself. So I know its only the upper that is having the problem. Once I got over the excitement of wanting to have the rifle built already I realized that this is ridiculous. No point in sticking with an upper than has an obvious problem. I've already contacted Vltor to see what we can do to fix this and am waiting on a response. |
| Try a bore mop with a little polishing compound on it chuck in a hand drill run the bore mop in and out of the pin hole for 5 seconds. Try pin in the hole repeat until pin slides through. I use this method on my cowboy Action shooting shot gun chambers and the cylinders on my revolvers so that fired shells drop out. |
