I am working on a precision rifle build, and as you know parts are scarce. I have the option to buy a 20" Wilson air gauged SS HBar 1:8 twist, chambered in 5.56mm. I plan on a floated handguard, and picatinny rail gas block. I don't shoot extrememely long ranges, mainly 100-200 yards, and vamint hunting. I also plan on using flat top receiver, with a good variable power scope. (haven't bought yet). Bull barrels are next to impossible to find, and I wanted a little lighter gun anyway.
Do you see any problems with using this barrel in this application. |
| No problem! For that application, that barrel will work very well. I don't think you would want to go any longer or heavier. Couple it with a good trigger (Timney, Geiselle, etc) and quality optics and you will have a very good shooting rifle. If you reload, try some 69gr Sierra Match King bullets over Varget powder and you should have no problem staying well under a MOA. |

FYI.
Sun Devil Mfg had mid weight Lothar Walther 20" 1x8 barrels with a matching bolt for $350 about a month back. These barrels do not have muzzle threads and are LW50 stainless. They were a steal at that price. I am very happy with mine. Have you checked on an Operator barrel from Denny's Guns/GTS Supply? Not a SS "match" barrel per se, but I'm seeing near match-grade results out of mine AND I don't have to baby it. The barrels are from Mike Rock (Rock Creek barrels) and are ION bond treated pr Denny's specs. 5.56 chambered, machine gun rated steel, and I'm getting sum-MOA (just under) groups with Federal SMKs 69 and 77gr. I'd imagine they'd be a bit better if I handloaded... He may be backordered too, but it's worth a shot. ETA: the barrel you've chosen will work just fine in its intended role, just thought I'd throw a few other options out there. Good luck man, couldn't imagine trying to build an AR during this particular mess. |

I'm trying to piece a carbine together for a friend (turned down 5 others the day O was elected, but told this guy I'd help him) and it's been pure hell. 9 months ago when I offered to build him a decent carbine, I told him I could build a decent rifle for ~$600-650 (and I could've). I can't find a standard, run-of-the-mill BCG for under $200. Again, good luck with your build. |

Dunno if this is what youir looking for, but I picked one up from them a few days ago. They also occasionally will get LPKs. |

I don't think I've seen an AR barrel that wasn't crowned, threaded or unthreaded. I'm 99.9999% sure your barrel will be crowned. No worries. Your FH/brake selection would be determined by what you intend to do with this rifle. 3-gun? get a nice comp/brake. Keep in mind that a comp/brake is going to be louder than a rifle outfitted with a flashhider or nothing at all. On my IDPA /3-gun rifle I currently use a JP tactical brake, but I've had good luck with the Miculek brake as well (clocked to the right a bit). My other rifles wear Vortex and Phantom flashiders. They are two of the best at the task and they don't break the bank. Since I'm not shooting at night, their primary purpose is to protect the crown and threads, BUT if I for some reason needed to shoot at night I know they'll perform well. |
