| What are the advantages/disadvantages of a slick side receiver vs a normal receiver? I'm looking to build and like the look of the slick side but don't know much about them if they are any worse or better. |

You can make a bad matter WORSE by trying to jam a round into the chamber! Pat Rogers recommends that you NEVER touch it! PursuitSS |

My first former AR SP1 was a slick side and it was pretty reliable and accurate, I didn't need the use of the forward assist at all.
The slight disadvantage would be if you're a left hand shooter or sometimes shoot weak side, some occasional brass might get close or even hit you. |

Thought something like this just looked cooler than the standard with the forward assist and dust cover. Looking to build a long range for target shooting so no real need for the forward assist that i can think of. |

PursuitSS This is true, You as AR15 owner should never ever have to use the Forward Assist, unless you are in a true combat scenario, even then you are probably better off just pulling on the charging handle to get the next round. I still think you should have it. |

Supposed to use the forward assist when a new mag is put in to help seat the first round...*shrug* still never did that and never had issues. :) |

http://members.cox.net/smashbang/SSCBC.jpg Who made that upper receiver? I want one!! It looks like it may be a 9mm flattop without the 9mm brass deflector and short port door:
ETA - It required drilling a gas tube hole to use as a 5.56 upper. |

I think there may be another reason to lean towards the slick side. I was told that in National Match competition, that forward assist equipped uppers were not allowed, or at least frowned upon. I have never independently verified that statement. Perhaps someone here can elaborate???

Why would you even type that

If someone was to drill a 9mm upper for the gas tube and complete the build as a .223, will .223 spent cases eject properly through the shorter door? |

I just checked Brownells' website and it's back to $125. Was it just a one day thing? If it's still on help a brother out and provide link, please. Sign up for the LEO/.mil/C&R discount at Brownell's and it's only $88. Even if you're not any of those categories, Brownell's doesn't ask for proof when you're creating the login/user ID and stating your LEO/.mil/C&R discount status. |
