What are the advantages/disadvantages of a slick side receiver vs a normal receiver?  I'm looking to build and like the look of the slick side but don't know much about them if they are any worse or better.

are you talking old school or the DPMS extruded thing?

If its the DPMS thing I would forgo it and get the bump and forward assist, for resale alone, also the forward assist lets you load quiet if you are hunting.

If you are going old school Slick is almost as old as you can get, also less weight, no snag.....

Advantages...........You aren't tempted to use that FRIKKEN Forward Assist. You can make a bad matter WORSE by trying to jam a round into the chamber! Pat Rogers recommends  that you NEVER touch it!

My first former AR SP1 was a slick side and it was pretty reliable and accurate, I didn't need the use of the forward assist at all.

The slight disadvantage would be if you're a left hand shooter or sometimes shoot weak side, some occasional brass might get close or even hit you.

Thought something like this just looked cooler than the standard with the forward assist and dust cover.  Looking to build a long range for target shooting so no real need for the forward assist that i can think of.

This is true, You as AR15 owner should never ever have to use the Forward Assist, unless you are in a true combat scenario, even then you are probably better off just pulling on the charging handle to get the next round. I still think you should have it.

Honestly, even in a combat situation I never had to use it...usually just charged and pulled the trigger if there was a misfeed of any type. Supposed to use the forward assist when a new mag is put in to help seat the first round...*shrug* still never did that and never had issues. :)

It looks like it may be a 9mm flattop without the 9mm brass deflector and short port door:

ETA - It required drilling a gas tube hole to use as a 5.56 upper.

Where are you getting these uppers from?  Midway is out and i've only found a few that offer a slick side receiver.

I think there may be another reason to lean towards the slick side.  I was told that in National Match competition, that forward assist equipped uppers were not allowed, or at least frowned upon.  I have never independently verified that statement.  Perhaps someone here can elaborate???

Ty

It is a 9mm upper and I'm not sure who made it.  As was posted, I have to drill it for a gas port.  Not a big deal.  I bought the DPMS Lo-Pro upper and was surprised at how beefy it is.  It is 10.6 oz compared to the 5.7 oz of the 9mm upper.   The chrome slick side carrier is from Fulton Armory.

My opinion on the no forward assist/no brass deflector is that if it was good enough for Gene Stoner to leave it out, then it's good enough for me.  Plus they are lighter, except of course, for the DPMS Lo-Pro.

My issue is most new slick sides are extruded not forged

Probably why it is heavier

I don't have a Forward Assist on my duty rifle. I Don't want to turn the rifle into a useless paper weight!

Correct, a Rock River Arms 9mm upper drilled for a gas tube!

If someone was to drill a 9mm upper for the gas tube and complete the build as a .223, will .223 spent cases eject properly through the shorter door?

[#29]
Shorter door is because the rear of the normal opening is filled with a large plastic case deflector.

Without the deflector, a regular door will fit.
