Ok, so I just turned 18 and as a belated b-day present, my father and I are going to build an AR15 (something we've dreamed of doing for a while now). We live in CA so of course a BulletButton (AR padlock for us) and 10rnd magazine are a must. I really want to build a Delta Force custom M4 (see pic) from Black Hawk Down.

So I have a few questions on what I should go with an where to find the parts.

I have access to a cnc machine & shop & a machinist who has expressed his desire to be a part of the build. Should I then, with all the rush to get lowers and uppers, machine my own? I found this site: CNC Gunsmithing which seems to have all the data needed to machine your own lower & upper... so should I go with this instead of buying a stock lower? I'm seeing the benefit of custom engraving, no wait time, 'unlimited' supply, and a way to make it even that much more a custom job... I could also just get a Spike's lower (I found one for $189) but I want the receiver to be a close as possible to the pictured Colt M727. Which route should I take? I priced out a piece of 7075-T6 aluminum for $100 and Type 3 Hard Anodizing for $65... $165 for a custom lower not to bad right?

Where can I find a mount (as pictured) to mount an Aimpoint Comp M2 on a carry handle? And where can I find a barrel mount for a surefire light (as pictured)?

And does it look like the rifle is a mid length? The hand guards seem longer than standard carbine length.

Thanks for the help, hopefully I can get this started in the next few months!

ETA: Added the pics and a question: What kind of stock does it appear to be? A standard M4 stock or a CAR stock?

Looks like a standard M4 setup all the way around. If you want a carry handle mount for an Aimpoint just look through the industry buttons above here. I'm sure you can find one, these are good dealers.

As far as cutting you're own upper and lower, that is up to you. If it were me I would walk before I run meaning I would just buy one of the many good uppers/lowers that are already out there and start out with the assembly process. Welcome to the addiction that is the "black rifle".

Good luck...

I would add, don't get a cheapie carry handle mount like you find on eBay etc.  You can't tighten them enough and the mount screw is made too soft you'll strip it, guaranteed.  Yes I speak from experience.

I think LaRue tactical has one, pricey, but they are amongst the best.

And for your first build, I'd buy a lower.  Save the CNC machining for the next one.  Yes there will be a next one, they're like Pringles, you can't stop at one.

Get an A2 upper or an A3 upper with carry handle.

"Except for the very first delivery order, all U.S. military-issue M4 and M4A1 possess a flat-top NATO M1913-specification (Picatinny) rail on top of the receiver "

To build the rifle in the pictures you will need the A2 upper

Ok, I've read some good reviews on Essential Arms in this forum, and it happens they basically have just what I need in a package for $570, tell me how it sounds:

EA Lower
EA Complete Matched A2 Upper (w/o barrel)
Parts Kit
CAR Handguard Set (this is what I need as the rifle pictured does not have M4 guards, they are the thinner CAR hand guards)
4POS Textured CAR Stock
A2 Style Flash Hider

The only things I'd need to purchase extra:

AR Padlock
16" M4 Profile Barrel
Magazine
Aimpoint Comp M2
Carry Handle Mount

Speaking of the mounts, I can't seem to find a LaRue mount, the only one I can find is so obscure company.... for around $60, does anyone know where to find a reliable mount?

I must have been wrong about a carry handle mount from LaRue Tactical as I can't find it now either

Your list looks pretty good, you could find great dealers here in AR15.com at the Equipment Exchange section or look for their site in the Industry section.

I would suggest getting your barrel from Bravo Company, their BCM M4 barrels are Mil-spec, great value and quality.

You might even want to get the 14.5" barrel length and install a permanent long A2 flash hider like the Sabre Defence flash hider so it would look more like the M4 carbines in the movie.

tenpercentfirearms.com also have California legal parts and info in building Calif. AR15, also check out the AR15.com Hometown section's CA forum for more info.

If you want to have maybe a custom Black Hawk Down engraving take a look at orion-arms.com.

You would also need tools like receiver action block, vise, barrel wrench, stock wrench, punch set, etc., read the tacked thread in this same forum - "Assemble Your Own Lower, Upper ..... - Step by Step Instructions" , it helped me to complete my four ARs builds.

The only downside now are some of the parts are hard to get, just be patient, you might have to wait for a while with some parts but it would be worth it, enjoy your build project.
