does a midlength gas system with 16 barrel need an f marked front sight for a flatop?

Colt started putting F marked FSBs on the M-4s because some of them would not zero with the sight post below the ears of the base.
That of course means that some of them were able to zero.

It has nothing to do with it being a flattop and a whole lot do with a shorter sight radius.

So Colt starts putting F FSBs on ALL their guns so they don't have to deal with having 2 different parts in the system.
And now, since Colt does it, it must be the absolute only (mil-spec) right way to do it.

So to answer your question, yeah, I would put an F marked FSB on a new build shorter than a rifle gas system.
But it may not be absolutely necessary, so don't sweat it too much if you can't find one.
