My question is if i would need anything besides a complete lower to have a working rifle.  It states that you can turn your original ar into this 5.45 model.  Does that mean that i need an upper already, or that this will be the complete upper and all i need is the lower.  I'm clearly a newbie.

This is everything it comes with:

This is an Auction for a New in Box Smith and Wesson Semi Automatic 5.45 X 39 Complete Flat Top Upper with a 16” Barrel for the AR-15 / M16.
This Kit allows you to take a Standard AR 15 / M16 Lower and Convert it the much more affordable 5.45 X 39 Caliber.
Included with this Upper Assembly is the Bolt, Semi Automatic Bolt Carrier, Charging Handle, Instructions, one 30rd 5.45 X 39 Magazine, and all Factory Paper Work.

No, nothing else.  Most people running 5.45 seem to need an extra strong hammer spring, but they are easy enough to change out if you find that you need one.

Don't forget You need the correct 5.45 magazines too!

Otherwise a standard AR lower with the extra power hammer spring (the Mil AK 5.45 Ammo has hard primers and you don't want a Doink! when you need a BANG!)

Nice system  - remember that most .MIL spec surplus ammo is CORROSIVE and you need extra special cleaning instead of just putting it away after shooting!!

You will also need a rear sight, or optic.

Thanks for the help.  I didn't realize that the ammo was more corrosive though.  Thats definitely news to me.  I've been reading so much about ammo and different guns over the past two months, but it really never ends.  There is always more too it.  I'm glad this forum is around, thats for sure.

The nice thing about non corrosive 5.45x39 is that it is available. No one wants it, they are looking for the cheap corrosive stuff. Non corrosive runs about the same price as 7.62x39 Wolf and is slightly cheaper thsan .223 Wolf and way, way cheaper than .223 brass case ammo.

If it comes in a tin it is corrosive.

However it is mildly corrosive and doesn't really matter.

I fired 1080 rounds through my 5.45 AR over a few months and then cleaned it. No failures during that time, and no signs of corrosion anywhere.
