If you can change a flat tire, and if you have use of a (mounted) vise, receiver vise block and a barrel nut wrench/armorers wrench, you can do it yourself. Some punches and some moly grease will be a boon to the effort.

But Shhhh!

If I read your question right and I believe I did. Changing the complete upper is simply a matter of pushing the two pins hold the upper and lower receivers together back slightly. They won't push all the way out. Once this is done the upper and lower will be separated. Put the new upper on lining the holes up and push the pins back in. It's that simple.

If he's really just swapping complete uppers.  If he's planning on just swapping the stripped upper (less barrel) then it's a bit more work, but, as they say, even a caveman can do it.

I just swapped an upper out on one of my 20-inch rifles this evening after work.  It took a whopping 10 minutes, and I'm slow and meticulous.  I've done it in well under that before, but no reason to get in a big hurry.  Like was was previously stated, make sure that you have a good barrel wrench, receiver blocks, a punch to knock out the gas tube roll pin, a little grease or CLP for the threads, and you will be good to go!

Since this is your first time, take it slow, and pay attention to detail, and you will be more than satisfied with the results.

I don't know about the cost of living where you are but that seems reasonable (the $150-200 part not the 2 hr part).

What kind of gas block do you have? Is it pinned, clamped, allan head screws, or a combo of those? Regardless, you can leave the gas tube in the gas block and slide it off.

What you want to do is easy. For less than the price of your gunsmith you can buy the tools to do it yourself.
