Hey guys,

First AR build... im going for an M4 look-alike

Whats the difference in rail setups for these rifles?  I see some selling for 60$ and some selling for 500$.  So whats the difference?  Who makes the best bang for the buck (if there is indeed a difference)?

Depends on what you want to do with the rifle.  Are you mil or leo?  Will you be mounting toys on the rail (VFG, light, laser, etc)?  Do you want it free floated?  Do you have a budget?  Do you care what others think about your gear?  Sorry, had to throw that one in.

I carried my M4gery as a duty weapon and I have a non free floated MI rail.  It held up great being thrown in and out of a car and it's considered low on the rail totem.

I want a rail with a nice feel and look.  Right away it will just get covers, but i want the option to throw whatever on there later on down the road if i want.

Also what are the advantages of free float? What are my options in that regard? (forgive me im a rookie when it comes to ARs)

Also, im just your weekend civilian shooter.

On a carbine the advantages of free floated rails are nil.

Try the KAC M4 RAS, you can find them on the equipment exchange for $150-225. And they would be ideal for an M4 lookalike since they are what the military uses.

If you're just into weekend plinking, then IMHO there's no need to buy a rail that's over $175.  You should be able to find an inexpensive Yankee or Midwest Industries non free float for around that and they are just fine for what you're doing.  Like I said, my MI carbine length has been GREAT for me!

Midwest Industries:

Also, just thinking...If you know someone that has experience with AR's and maybe some tools, you might be able to get a YHM free float for even cheaper and have a buddy install it for you.  Just a thought.  Either way, good luck!
