Howdy all,

When ever my middy upper shows up I will be installing a used YHM forearm I got on Ebay and the only problem with it is that I squashed the jam nut removing it (it was sealed with locktite) from the barrel nut. Everything else is in great shape. My questions are: 1. Since the OEM barrel nut is steel & the YHM barrel nut is aluminum should they be torqued to the same value? My aviation maintenance background telsl me no. The instructions downloaded from the YHM web page say to tighten it using their wrench & then get the gas tube to line up. OEM style nuts get tq to 30 then line up the tube but don't exceed 80. I already have a mil spec barrel wrench that has three pins and can be attached to a tq wrench. So how would you gurus install this? 2. Any ideas for an alternate tool to tighten the new jam nut? I don't mind spending the 20 bucks but if I can use a strap wrench that’s 20 bucks toward ammo!

Thanks

I installed a YHM quad rail using the standard method.  Install barrel nut to 30 ftlb 3 times then tighten until gas tube lines up.  Which on my install was just about perfect.  i only had to very slightly tighten more for alignment.

Hope this helps.

I torqued mine to 33 ft. lbs. three times without issue. I would try and find a friend or someone in you area that would let you borrow their armorer's wrench/torque wrench set up. If worse comes to worse though, you should be able to do over 30 ft. lbs. of torque on the nut even without the torque wrench. Just apply as much torque as you can give with your arm three times.

Now for the jam nut, I did not have a tool specifically for doing that. I used a flat head screw driver and hammer and hit one of the slots on the jam nut at an angle three times.
