OK - I have been toying around with my Bushmaster AR-15 (Model XM15-E2S) that I purchased new back in August of 2006. I have become more enthusiastic about this rifle and have made the following enhancements to the Receiver and to my magazine selection:
MIAD AR15 Grip - Full Kit in Olive Drab, Magpul 30-round, Standard PMAG Rifle Magazines and Magpuls, Bushmaster Rubber Telestock Butt Pad, Cheekpiece for Bushmaster Six Position Telestock, Accu-Wedge, LaRue Tactical Recoil Bushing Spring, Enidine Recoil Bushing, and Geissle 2-Stage Trigger, DPM – Small. Anyone have any suggestions for any possible improvements I can make to the lower receiver in the areas of reliability and accuracy before I proceed to the upper receiver? Thanks. Cheers! |
If you have $ to spend; The NORGON ambi mag catch/release is about the single nicest upgrade out there beyond the obvious trigger & stock. I have one, but at $70 I can't afford to put them on all my ARs. Wilson Combat makes a decent o-size bolt release, not too bulky, it sits close to the rec per oe, but has a large padle you'll have no trouble w/even after 3 fingers are shot off . Last & one of my favs is the KAC rear ambi QD sling mount for coll. stks., it replaces the oe buffer tube nut and plate rather than the other guy's add-on style. Becomming less needed as so many stocks now have built in QD provisions. They make a sim pt for A2/type stocks, but it adds an inch to LOP which many already consider long w/the A2 stk. Solution is to use the A1 stk. Can't remember the op, but I'm assuming you already have a KNS pin set- or are they not compatible w/the Geisselle? Nice Choice by the way!
Brownells for the first two, KAC/Lawmans & Shooters Supply for the last. Only KAC outlet I know of. |

Your OP doesn't say what you're using the gun for, so I'm assuming recreational shooting here. Those items you listed don't really make the gun any better, some are designed to correct specific issues. I'd take the money you save and put it into a decent sight or optic for your upper or buy more Pmags. |

The rifle is used for recreational shooting, and of course as part of the necessary support weapons cache if it all "goes to hell." I've got ten Pmags right now but plan to double that amount. Once I feel the lower receiver has been suitably completed I will go top side and begin work on the upper receiver. I'm not interested in rails and the rest of those type of accessories unless one can provide "free float" to my barrel. I'm looking for accuracy and reliability improvements. Not particularly interested in a lot of stuff hanging off the rifle (gets way too heavy), maybe a bi-pod and a light. Thanks to everyone for their imput so far. Cheers! |

I took spryguy's suggestion and ordered the Wilson Combat oversized bolt release. I should receive that and install it within the next few days.
All the enhancements I've made so far, in my opinion, have made the rifle (the only AR I own) a more reliable and solid unit (even including the Accuwedge which did specifically eliminate the excess play between the upper and lower receiver). While the PMags have been excellent, I never had any feeding issues with my old USMC-issue mags. Actually, all of these additions would have been appreciated more if I'd had them for my duty weapon in the Corps. With the exception of the Norgon ambidextrious mag catch/release (which I'll probably add), I'm done with the lower receiver. Now to the upper. Any ideas? |

Turns out, I'm already subscribed to that thread - just didn't put two and two together. |

I mistakenly included the titanium firing pin I purchased in the lower receiver category. Seems to be working great - a bit sharper than the stock pin. Any other suggestions regarding the bolt and bolt carriage assemby? The best made bolt out there? Thanks. Check these out. These are the only two in the series so far. They were made for people like you (who want the best, and will afford it) Preferred M16 and AR15 Bolt Carriers Preferred Flash Hider / Muzzle Brake / Compensator The prices should still be current. |
