What are the advantages/disadvantages of Chrome Moly and Stainless Steel barrels?

From what I have read there is not much difference.  SS is suppose to have a little more throat erosion resistance.  I doubt you will notice any difference with normal shooting for the life of the barrel.

Stainless steel barrels are definitely more accurate than CM or CM chrome plated barrels.

I am not sure I disagree with you, but it may need a clarification.  First I don't believe the SS is more accurate than CM.  BUT the SS will resist throat erosion better so will maintain its top accuracy better (longer) than CM.   At that point it will be more accurate than CM, so maybe we don't have anything to argue about, just wanted to clarify.

all i know is this:

how many barrels have you seen that are intended for high accuracy rifles are plain chromoly?  there must be a reason greater than purely asthetic for this.  ive had 2 rifles with chromoly (one was a bull barrel), one with a chromed, and one in SS.  i know from being in the metal fabrication industry that stainless steel is a more durable, higher grade of steel than chromoly.  it may not make any difference in a gun barrel.

use the SEARCH button...LOTS of topics on this

CM tends to be cheaper overall; SS tend to be more made for accuracy potential...hw/, both materials can be used to make real tack drivers
SS tends to have more corrosion resistance
