I'm new here and I'm trying to decide on building an upper reciever or just buying a complete upper. I've been checking around on sites that sell ar parts and started to notice some have recievers that say M4 feed ramps, (I want an M4 type upper) is this important? Because it now has me confused on what to get...

when they get stuff in stock!!!

Also, I already have a DPMS lower.

Welcome.

Just buy an assembled upper. Especially if you do not plan on building another rifle any time soon.

An M4 upper will (should) have deeper feed ramps.  Here's a good compairison...

Just remember *not* to buy one from Blackthorn / Vulcan / Hesse as they seem a bit confused on this issue.

Ok. That clears that up. Any ideas on a decent m4 barrel thats good but not too expensive. I don't plan on using my AR but maybe once or twice a month.

I debated the same thing and decided to just buy a complete upper/barrel assembly.  No need to invest in the extra tools/action block if you're only going to build one or two rifles.

After thinking about it, I think I will just get the parts that just "slide" together.
i.e. Barrel and reciever already together,a bolt carrier group/w T-handle and handguards.

Building an upper is starting to look more complicated...

If you are really inclined to build the upper yourself, the action block is not neccessary.  It is helpful (atleast I would assume it is), but I built my upper without an of these "extra" tools and it has performed flawlessly through my first 3,000 rounds fired since I built it almost 5 months ago.  Although to be fair, my upper receiver (VLTOR VIS) came with the "special" barrel nut tool attachment for a socket wrench.  Every other tool I used, was a tool you should already have in your garage.  So these "extra" tools are not neccessary, with the only exception possibly being the barrel nut tool.

Sounds good but I think I'll still go with putting one together since I only plan on having just one AR.

I have had a Bushy-M4 but she was stolen by some thieving punk while I was out. And since there was no proof he was the one (although other people knew) cops can't do anything about it. Plus it would have been long gone by the time the cops would have even went to his place.

Gimp, great post! You just cleared up a lot of confusion for people that have never seen the M4 cuts. Sad to say but , there are "so called" builders out there that don't have that info. I can say I was surprised the first time I ran across an upper with the M4 cuts when they first surfaced in civi land .

I agree, I think I would have been really ticked if I had built from scratch and had the wrong reciever and barrel combination... I had never heard of the cut outs untill about a day ago.
