I have heard that some manufacturers finish the steel under the FSB, and others just leave white steel.

Does anyone have photos of a barrel with the FSB taken off that shows how both look?

I have seen pictures that show it as being shiny underneath, but I don't know if that is because it was never finished, or if it has developed a shine from lots of oil and/or scratches from the FSB coming off.

Anyone have some comparison photographs? I would really enjoy seeing the difference.

Thanks.

Here’s a pic of a barrel with the FSB removed and no park underneath. For a parked barrel, just imagine those two areas looking exactly the same as the rest of the barrel.

Thanks Quib.... great answer, as usual.

In your opinion, is the parkerizing a big deal? I know a lot of rifles don't have it... but I also know that most of the rifles people generally consider to be of the highest quality normally do.

I believe either way, park or no park, there is the opportunity for corrosion to form under the FSB. With out park it might start faster, but even with a parked barrel, as the FSB is installed, it is removing the park as it is pressed on.

The advantage to park where corrosion is concerned, is that park is porous. It holds oil on the surface of the weapon helping to prevent the formation of corrosion.

So... I guess the lesson is to spay some CLP around the FSB and hope it seeps into the crack? Maybe grease the FSB and barrel before installation?

I wouldn't lose any sleep over concerns about rust under the gas block.

If we suppose that some rust does form, what harm do you see coming from this.

I mean, its not like you're going to be using your AR barrel as a flag mast on a sea trawler.

Whatever oxidation may occur is going to be completely hidden by the next gas block.
